Year 1 Maths- Exploring 3D Shapes
Year 1 have really enjoyed learning about 3D shapes in maths. They have been learning to identify 3D shapes by name and sort them into groups. They have focused on recognising cubes, cuboids, square-based pyramids, triangular-based pyramids, cones, spheres, cylinders and various prisms such as a triangular prism. They have also worked exceptionally hard to sort them in different ways. For example, we have had children sorting them into can and cannot roll, does have a circular face and doesn’t have a circular face, does have 6 sides and doesn’t have 6 sides, prisms and not prisms and so on… Well done Year 1! You’ve really impressed us with how quickly you've learnt the names of various 3D shapes and been able to recognise their features.
Reception - Christmas Challenges
Reception have enjoyed completing a range of Christmas challenges this week during their choosing time. They have been using strips of paper in the creative area to make Christmas tree pictures, ordering the gingerbread men from smallest to biggest, following instructions to draw a snowman and developing their fine motor painting skills.
Whole School- Design Technolgy
This half term, our students have been busy creating a range of designs in Design Technology. From Reception's wooden Christmas decorations to Year 6's electronic steady hand games, our children have showcased their imaginative and creativity skills. Year 1 brought their imaginations to life, creating interactive moving storybooks using slider mechanisms. Year 2 developed their sewing skills, designing and creating a range of Christmas puppets. Year 3 designed and made festive pouches, perfect for holding small gifts or treats. Year 4 stitched up Christmas stockings, ready to hang by the chimney, finally, Year 5 created festive cushions. These creations were showcased and sold at our Christmas Fayre. We're incredibly proud of the hard work and imagination our students have demonstrated in these festive DT projects.
Year 3- Maths- Making arrays using counters
This week in Maths, Year 3 mathematicians have been deepening their understanding of arrays by working with counters. They’ve practiced arranging counters into rows and columns, exploring a variety of combinations. Using concrete materials has made their learning both engaging and enjoyable, helping to reinforce key concepts effectively.
Reception Maths - Composition
Reception watched an episode of Numberblocks where the different numbers used different shapes to make patterns. We have been thinking about parts that make up numbers, so we had a go at making our own numberblock shape patterns and discussed the parts we could see.
Year 3- NO PENS DAY - Litter picking- Brainbox games-What can you remember in just 10 seconds?
Today, Year 3 celebrated No Pens Day thanks to our Smart School Council. They combined learning by litter picking, demonstrating teamwork, communication, and a strong sense of kindness and spirituality. They even discussed how God and the community would be pleased with their efforts. In the classroom, they paired up for a fun game of BrainBox, boosting their memory, observation skills, and understanding of math and reading. Oracy skills were embedded throughout the day, as students listened attentively, took turns to talk, and engaged in thoughtful discussions.
Year 4 - Maths: Three Times Tables
Teamwork was key in our maths session today. In celebration of No Pens Day, our maths included a combination of singing, matching, playing online games and puzzle solving. We learned the three times tables and used this knowledge to create fact families. Our extension activity today was to complete a three times table Tarsia. It proved to be more difficult than they first thought, but it certainly challenged them.
Year 1 Maths- Finding a Part
In maths, we have been focusing on finding a part. To do this, we had to look at the part we were given and then work out how many more we needed to count on in order to make the whole. We also figured out that we could do this by finding the difference between the whole and the part that we were given.
Reception- Maths-More and Fewer
In maths we were using the pan balance to compare more and fewer. We had a discussion about what ‘fewer’ could mean. Beau said “it means less” and Marnie-May said “it means there aren’t as much”. We put an uneven amount of cubes in each side of the pan balance and watched what happened. The children observed that the side with fewer cubes ‘went up’ and the side with more cubes ‘went down’.
Year 2- Maths- Adding across a 10
Our focus this week in maths, was adding across a 10. This can be tricky as it requires an exchange from ones to tens. We have used base 10 to help us work out the answers. As we have practiced more and more, we are becoming much more confident and becoming much more familiar with the steps of the additions.
Reception - Cardinality pizza maths
In Maths this week we have been reviewing accurate counting by making pizzas! The children had to roll a dice, check the number and count the correct amount of toppings for the pizza, remembering our stopping number.
Year 1 Maths- Addition Sentences
This week in maths, Year 1 have been focusing on creating and writing addition sentences within 10. Today, they used their ten frames to make numbers in various ways e.g. making 6 using 6 + 0 and 0 + 6, 5 + 1 and 1 + 5 and so on. They did a tremendous job. Well done Year 1.
Year 4 - Maths: Subtraction
Our place value grids are coming in very useful in maths this week. We’ve been learning how to subtract two 4-digit numbers, working up to making exchanges. In order to understand the concept of exchanges, we drew out the problem and crossed off the counters. Then we could see if there wasn’t enough to take from a column and adjusted accordingly. We will continue to develop this technique across the week.
Year 5 - Square Numbers
Year 5 got hands-on with square numbers, building visual models to understand how these numbers are formed. Through arranging objects into perfect squares, they explored the patterns and concepts behind square numbers with enthusiasm and curiosity!
Reception - Comparing who has more?
This week in Maths, Reception have been looking at comparing amounts. We have been thinking about the word ‘more’ when comparing quantities and what this means. The children have been using their subitising and counting skills to help them decide who has more in a range of games within provision. They have done brilliantly with this!
Year 2- Adding by making 10
This week we have be making 10 whilst adding two numbers together. Our knowledge of number bonds to 10 have really helped with this. Sometimes a question can look difficult but we have found if we partition the number to make 10 first it can be much easier to find the answer.
Year 6 - Money Matters
This week, year 6 welcomed a member of the money matters team into their classroom. It was great to hear them discussing potential careers they would like to pursue in the future and the mature responses they gave throughout the session.
Year 6 - Maths
Today, Year 6 focused on the ability to be flexible in maths and were encouraged to try out different mental strategies to find one that suits them. We discussed that we can often revert back to strategies that we feel comfortable with, but sometimes, if we step out of our comfort zone, we can discover more efficient ways of completing a task. It was great to see plenty of mathematical talk! Well done year 6!
Year 4 Maths - collecting and presenting data
In our maths lessons this week we have been focusing on statics. Today the children collected various data including favourite colours and fruits, tallying their results. Following this they then created their own pictograms and bar charts.
Reception: Funnybones
This morning, our Reception class read ‘Funnybones’. Each time we heard big, little and dog skeleton we put actions in so that we all paid attention and could retell the story after. We then completed some challenges in continuous provision linked to the story. Some of the children painted skeletons, some children had to problem solve to complete a skeleton using playdough, some counted bones and matched the amount to the numeral and some practised their fine motor skills too. It has been wonderful to see lots of busy children living life in all its fullness in Reception, well done!
Reception - Subitising Bingo
In Maths, we have been practising our subitising skills by playing a game of bingo. We rolled a 1-3 dice and looked at the different picture arrangements on our sheet. We were brilliant at subitising the amounts on the bingo cards and matching them to the numeral.
Year 4 - Maths: 3D Shape
It’s been a very practical session in Year 4 today, with the children handling and exploring the properties of 3D shapes. They used a range of mathematical vocabulary to create an accurate description of their chosen shape, counting the number of edges, vertices, flat faces and curved surfaces. They also used their knowledge of 2D shapes from earlier in the week to name their shapes.
After-School Foodie Friends Club- Making flapjacks
The Foodie Club had a blast making flapjacks today! They measured the ingredients using weighing scales mixed them thoroughly, and created delicious treats.
Reception - Collections of 3
Reception have been looking at the composition of 3 by looking at different collections. We made collections of 3 using the connecting shapes and talked about what we could see to make 3. E.g. 2 red shapes and 1 blue shape makes 3.
Year 3- Maths- Partitioning 3 digit numbers using place value counters
Today, Year 3 were introduced to place value counters for the first time. They compared them to familiar resources like base 10 blocks and learned to represent numbers using the counters. By breaking down numbers like 253 into 2 hundreds, 5 tens, and 3 ones, the children started to understand place value concepts more easily. They also learned about the hundreds column on a place value chart. It was great to see them supporting each other and using the place value chart to visualise the numbers and their place values.
Reception - Counting to 5
Reception have been focusing on counting objects up to 5. We looked at how to count correctly by touching objects as we count them, saying the numbers in the right order and stopping when we have counted every item in the set - this tells us how many we have altogether.
After-School Foodie Friends Club- Mouth Watering Shaped Biscuits
During our after-school foodie club today, the children had fun turning into little bakers, making all kinds of shaped biscuits. They even got to use their maths skills, carefully weighing out the butter, sugar, and flour on the scales. Cracking an egg was a highlight before mixing everything into a soft dough. It was wonderful to see them helping each other roll it out and using shape cutters to create stars, hearts, flowers, and bunny rabbits. Once baked in the school oven, they packed their biscuits into little paper bags to take home and share with their families.
Year 5 - Irreversible Changes
This week, Year 5 explored the fascinating chemical reaction and irreversible change that occurs when vinegar is mixed with bicarbonate of soda. During their experiments, the children observed how the mixture produced a gas, resulting in bubbling and fizzing as carbon dioxide was released. They noted that the original substances could not be recovered, making this a clear example of an irreversible change. After conducting the experiment, the children wrote detailed reports, describing their observations, the chemical reaction involved, and why this reaction cannot be reversed. It was an exciting hands-on lesson in science, reinforcing the concept of irreversible changes in a fun and engaging way.
Year 3- Maths- Place value
This week in maths, Year 3 have been using concrete resources to help them partition numbers up to 100 and represent numbers up to a 1000.
Multiplying and dividing by powers of 10
In year 6, we have been developing our place value knowledge and moved onto multiplying and dividing by powers of 10. We discussed what happens to the digits in numbers when they are multiplied and divided by 10, 100 and 1000.
Reception: Our First Day Group 1
This morning we welcomed our first group to Reception. They were superstars and settled in really well. They enjoyed exploring our indoor classroom today. We are so glad they have joined our St Barnabas family.
Reception: Our First Day Group 2
This afternoon we welcomed our second group to Reception. They were superstars and settled in really well. They enjoyed exploring our indoor classroom today. We are so glad they have joined our St Barnabas family.
Year 3- Maths- Tell the time to 5 minutes
In maths today, Year 3 focused on using analogue clocks to tell the time to the nearest 5 minutes, building on their learning from Year 2. To start, the children recapped that there are 60 minutes in an hour. With this knowledge, they explored why quarters of an hour are equal to 15 minutes and why the 12 intervals around a clock face each represent 5 minutes. Partitioning the clock vertically from 12 to 6 helped the children visually recognise whether a time is past or to the hour. As in the previous lesson, the children used analogue clocks with moveable hands to physically make different times. Additionally, the children tested their partners by setting different times on their clocks and asking their partners to read the time.
Year 1 Maths- Telling the time to the hour
This morning in Year 1, we have been learning to tell the time to the hour. We made various o’clock times e.g. 6 o’clock, 2 o’clock, 9 o’clock and 11 o’clock and then we made various o’clock times using clues such as the time that we go to bed, wake up in the morning and have our dinner.
Creating Geometric Patterns in Year 4 Art
In this session, the children used a compass to draw a circle. They then chose the outline of the circle to draw over the top to create a flower style pattern. Using the compass was super tricky, but they soon grasped the hang of it and produced some lovely colourful and unique geometric patterns.
Year 4 - Maths: Quadrilaterals
We are currently working on shape in maths, and we began the week by defining and classifying quadrilaterals. There were a few tricky examples and non-examples thrown in to test us, but we used our knowledge of the shapes’ properties to work out which were quadrilaterals and which weren’t.
Reception: Our New Classroom
The children in Reception have loved our new outdoor canopy that was built last week. This has extended our classroom to provide an outdoor area that the children can access in all weathers. Our indoor classroom has also had a refresh and the children have loved exploring all of the areas!
Reception - Dice Frames and Number bonds
Reception have been using the dice ten frame to look at number bonds to 10. They picked a handful of different objects and used the frame to see how many they had and how many more they needed to make 10.
Year 1 Maths- Making quarter, half, three quarter and full turns
After their learning about halves and quarters in their unit on fractions, Year 1 had to apply this learning to their most recent maths lesson to make quarter, half, three-quarter and full turns. They did this with various shapes such as triangles and rectangles.
Year 3- Design Technology- Make a castle using 3D shapes – both nets and junk modelling.
This term in Design Technology, Year 3 have learned about various features and designs of castles, including moats, drawbridges, battlements, keeps, and turrets. They have practised drawing their castle designs using 2D shapes and labelling the 3D shapes that will create these features. The students have constructed nets using glue to make geometric shapes and have stacked these shapes along with recyclable materials to build the structures of their castles. Next, they will evaluate their products, reflect on their challenges, and consider what they might do differently next time to improve their designs.
Year 3- Design Technology-Constructing nets to make 3D shapes
In D.T. this afternoon, the children constructed various 3D geometric shapes for building castles. They cut along bold lines, folded along dotted lines, ensured tabs were the correct size, made crisp folds, and used glue to assemble the nets into 3D shapes.
Reception Maths - Compostion of 6
Reception have been revisiting the number 6 and what parts it is made up of. They arranged 6 spots in different patterns and thought about the arrangement of 6 on a die. They then used the numicon pieces to create their own compositions of 6.
Year 6 Money Matters
Year 6 had their final money matters session this week led by Debt Aware- Money skills for life. They at enterprise and entrepreneurs.
Year 6 Maths
In maths, year 6 have looked at developing their understanding of shape. This started by familiarising themselves with the properties of shapes which then moved onto identifying 3D shapes from 2D representations.
Reception - 2D Shapes
Reception have been looking at the properties of some 2D shapes and spotting shapes in our environment. We have been looking at which shapes have straight sides and which are curved. We have spotted lots of 2D shapes in our classroom!
Year 1 Maths-Sharing Equally
Today in their maths lesson, Year 1 shared equally. To do this, they took their time and made sure that each of the groups that they were sharing into had the same amount of cubes or counters. Some children grouped theirs into rows and/or columns like an array to help them see more clearly and others even managed to make the connection between multiplication and division (sharing) e.g. 40 shared between 4 will be 10 because I know that there are 4 groups of 10 in 40. Impressive!
Year 1 Maths
Today in maths, year 1 made arrays with counters and/or cubes. They had to think about whether they were going to organise their groups into rows or columns before making their arrays. Well done year 1.
Year 2 - Maths
Today we carried on looking at different units of measure. We have moved on to measuring volume. Today we were using millilitres to measure volume. We explored how different containers can hold more water so they have a larger capacity. After solving problems in our book we got hands on and began measuring out different amounts of water in our measuring jugs. This helped us to visualise how much water 100ml actually was. We took some water away and created a calculation on our whiteboards to show what we had done with the water.
Reception - Counting sets and Cardinality
Reception have been looking at Cardinality - counting the number of objects in a large set. They have been thinking carefully about ‘counting rules’ to help them to count accurately, such as counting one at a time, saying numbers in the right order, moving objects into a line and saying the stopping number.
Food Technology - Biscuit designing in Year 4
In our DT Food Technology session we have been designing our very own biscuits for a targeted audience. First we looked at what a budget was and how much our basic ingredients would cost. Next we looked at what remaining budget we had from £2.00 per group and then we could decide on what extra ingredients we could add. The children worked really hard to manage their budgets and agree on what would work for their target audiences. We can’t wait to make our new special biscuits and add our own logos to the package design in our next lesson.
Year 3 - Science- Investigating how friction can be decreased or increased.
This afternoon in Science, Year 3 conducted a "ramp investigation" to explore how objects move on different sloping surfaces, considering friction. They made a small ramp using a piece of wood. Then, they placed a car on top of the ramp and observed how it moved down without being pushed. The children experimented by laying different materials on the ramp, such as fabric, tin foil, and plastic, to see how they affected the car's movement and friction. They made systematic and careful observations, and where appropriate, took accurate measurements using standard units.
Reception Maths - Odd or Even?
Reception have been looking at odd and even numbers this week. We have been using the numberblocks and numicon to identify if the numbers have an odd block or even top. We have then been sorting them in our provision and the outdoor yard. We have also talked about the doubles we can see within an ‘even top’
Year 4 Maths - Making a whole number with tenths
Our maths lesson this morning focused on making a whole with tenths. The children used hundred squares to represent 1 whole and marked as both a fraction and a decimal. They then moved onto working with part- whole models by adding and subtracting tenths to solve the problems. Finally the children moved onto problem solving working hard to complete various challenges.
Year 2 - Maths
This week in maths, we have moved on to length and height. First we measured in centimetres using our rulers. When an object became too big to measure in centimetres we need to measure in meters. Today we chose objects from around the classroom and estimated if they would be longer or shorter than 1 meter. As a class we used out meter ruler to measure these objects and check our estimations.
Year 1- Capacity and Volume
Today in maths, Year 1 learnt about capacity and volume. They learnt that the capacity of a container is how much it can hold and the volume is how much it is currently holding. First, they looked at some containers and had to decide which ones they thought would have the greatest capacity and why. After that, they learnt how to describe volume using the language of empty, nearly empty, full and nearly full. Then they had to use this language to describe the volume of liquid that they could see in various containers and use water to fill various containers using the language that they were given e.g. Pour water into this container until it is nearly full.
Year 1- Measuring the Mass of Objects
Today in their maths lesson, Year 1 were estimating and measuring the mass of objects using a balancing scale and cubes. They learnt that they should stop adding/counting cubes when the scale has balanced as this means that they have calculated the mass. They did really well with this and their estimates got better as the activity progressed as they could reason better e.g. I think this object will be 30 cubes because it feels heavier than the scissors which were 16 cubes.
Reception - Doubles
In Maths we have been looking at the concept of doubles. We watched the Numberblocks episode ‘terrible twos’ to see how numberblock 4 is made of 2 and 2 - double 2! We talked about the word ‘double’ meaning 2 parts that are the same. We then used a butterfly template to show our own doubles on the butterfly wings, making sure that each wing had the same/equal amount.
Year 2 - Maths
For the last 4 weeks, we have been learning our 2 , 5 and 10 times tables. Within this, we have learnt how to times numbers by 2 , 5 and 10. We have also been learning about doubling, halving and dividing. This week we have been focusing on dividing by 5. We used counters to make an array. From these arrays we have been able to split the total amount up into 5 groups. Then we can see how many is in each group and work out the answer. Maths in year 2 has been quite tricky lately but the children have tried so hard and have acquired new maths skills as a result.
Year 1 Maths- Measuring with a Ruler
Today in Year 1, the children have been learning to measure objects accurately using a ruler. They learnt that in order to measure accurately, they needed to make sure that the start of the object that they were measuring with was lined up with 0 and that they counted along until the number that their object ended at. They also learnt that they were measuring in centimetres.
Year 5 - Decimals and Fractions
This week the children have been working on the relationship between fractions and decimals. The children have been comparing, ordering and finding equivalences. Year 5 have delved deeper into challenging problem solving questions to enhance and deepen their understanding of method and reasoning.
Year 4 - Maths: Solving Addition Problems
Any lesson undertaken outside of the classroom creates an air of excitement, and in Year 4, the children particularly enjoyed their maths trail in the hall. In pairs, the children chose an addition problem from around the room. Their mission was to solve it on their own then compare answers with their partner, discussing how they reached their answers. Once they felt confident about the answer they had to show Mrs Araujo and then choose their next problem. If they made a mistake, Mrs Araujo sent them back to spot the error. The children worked well in pairs, coaching each other and demonstrating resilience in reaching the correct answer.
Year 3- Maths- Measuring in metres and centimetres
In today's math lesson, Year 3 revised skills learnt in Year 2, measuring the length of objects using either metres or centimetres. They revisited these skills by starting with measuring objects in centimetres using a ruler. Additionally, they had the opportunity to compare each other's work.
Year 4 Number Fluency Conceptual Lesson
In our Number Fluency session this morning we focused on how to solve division facts by recalling a known multiplication fact. We watched the animations on finding into groups of two, writing and reading division equations and then practical of division facts as multiplication. The children worked really well together to identify various expressions sticking fact families together along with bar models for each representation.
Year 3- British Science Week- Time- Experimenting Yeast Burps every 15 minutes for 45 minutes.
The future Scientists of Year 3 had a fun science project for British Science Week, all about making electricity without burning coal. Working in pairs, they had four cups, each numbered 1 to 4, with yeast added to all of them. Cup 1 got 150ml of cold water, cup 2 got the same amount of warm water, cup 3 had warm water and a teaspoon of salt added, and cup 4 had sugar and 150 ml of warm water. They secured the cups with gloves and rubber bands to keep air in. They observed what was happening every minute 15 minutes for 45 minutes to see how things changed over time. Before experimenting, Year 3 predicted what might happen. Some thought the yeast would turn into flour or make the gloves fly! But they were amazed by what happened. As time passed, the yeast made a gas called carbon dioxide. This gas filled the gloves, making them blow up like balloons. Cup 4 had the most respiration because it contained sugar. As the yeast consumes the sugar, it releases carbon dioxide gas. With nowhere else to go but upwards, this gas gradually inflates the glove. The whole experiment wowed the kids! It was fun celebrating science during British Science Week, with a theme of time.
Year 3- Food Technology- Bake with Jessica Sharp
Year 3 had the best time meeting Jessica this afternoon. Jessica is a professional baker/ chef who runs a bakery business from home. She shared her passion for baking, inspired by her grandmother. The children made a scrumptious fruit crumble, from chopping apples, weighing flour, to layering the pastry and creating the crumble topping. They also had the opportunity to look at pictures of some of the wonderful cakes Jessica has made over the years.
Year 2 - Maths
Today in maths, we continued our learning with multiplication. We made equal groups of counters which we added together. From this we were able to write our multiplication sentence with the multiply symbol. Once we had created our groups, when then moved the counters into stacks. This is called unitising, it made it easier to see that 1 group does not always have a value of 1.
Reception: Imagine That Educational Visit
Wow, what a fantastic day our Ducklings had today. We visited Imagine That in Liverpool and had lots of fun! The children did lots of experiments with dry ice, made magical snow and made slime too. They used their imaginations in the roleplay area, painted a car, explored the creative area and made their own magnets. They were well behaved and represented the school beautifully!
SIG5 Times Tables Competition
We are so proud of our amazing mathematicians for showing great courage when taking part in the School Improvement Group (SIG) timestables competition at St Peter's. Our SIG is made up of 12 other local schools and this was the first timestables competition. Two children were chosen to represent our school from each KS2 class and they had to take part in a TT Rockstars battle with the other schools. We were amazed at the speed of the some of the competitors at some of the other schools and it has made us more determined to keep practising our tables and aim to get faster and faster. Thank you to Mr Prescott, our Maths Leader, for organising our school maths team and to St Peter's for hosting it.
Reception- Maths- finding different ways of making numbers to ten
In maths we have been looking at different ways of making numbers to ten. We have been doing this in various ways, we have used the Hungarian tens frame and we have also used a computer program called ‘ways to make’. The children are really starting to understand numbers in more depth.
Year One Maths-Using a Numberline to Compare and Order Numbers
This week, Year 1 have been making use of number lines to 20 to compare and order numbers. They have subitising numbers to 20, finding these numbers on their number lines and then deciding which numbers are the greatest and smallest. They have been working on their ability to explain how they have subitised the numbers and also on how they have come to the decision that a number is greater or smaller by thinking about its proximity to zero.
Year 6 Money Matters
The focus of year 6’s money matters session was gambling. The children gained an understanding of how addictive gambling can become and the impact it can have on someone’s life. This was illustrated really clearly to the children in a game they played in which they could place bets with artificial money.
Year 5 - Multiplication
Today, Year 5 have been exploring multiplying two digit numbers by two digit numbers. The children used an area model to understand the place value within the multiplication to answer the questions. This helped the children gain a deeper understanding of the material; understanding the role that place value plays when multiplying by a two digit number.
Reception Maths - composition of 5
Reception have been finding different ways to make 5 using two colours and five frames.
Year 2 - P.E.
This week, we combined our knowledge of shapes from our maths work and our superb P.E skills. After warming up, we jumped into shapes and out of them ready for our landings. The children loved showing off new shapes they jumped into. Some shapes made it more difficult to land so it was important to be quick in and out of the shapes.
Year 2 - Maths
We have moved onto from 2D shapes to 3D shapes. This week we have been counting faces, edges and vertices on 3D shapes. It can be difficult to count without losing count or counting the same one twice. We have found strategies to make sure our counting is accurate.
Reception - Ordering Numbers
Reception have been working hard to sequence numbers 1-10. They have been using their counting skills to check which number comes next to ensure they are in the right order.
Year 3- Maths- Multiply and Divide by 3.
Today, the Year 3 class progressed in their understanding. They explored the concept of division by 3, actively engaging in activities where they shared objects into three equal groups and grouped items in sets of three. Furthermore, they applied this knowledge by drawing jumps on the number line to solve problems involving dividing given numbers by 3.
Year 1 Maths
Year One are focusing on numbers to 20. They have been identifying and representing numbers in many different ways for example with Rekenreks, Numicon, tally, ten frames and base 10.

Year 1 Maths- Repeating Patterns
This week, Year 1 have been exploring 2D and 3D shape patterns. They made their own repeating patterns using 3D shapes.
Year 1- Sorting 2D Shapes
In maths, Year 1 have been exploring the different ways that 2D shapes can be sorted. They sorted them by their shape (circles, triangles rectangles, squares, pentagons and hexagons) and also by the number of sides and corners that they have e.g. 3 or less sides and 4 or more sides or 4 or less corners and more than 4 corners. Well done Year 1.
Year 3 - Maths- Making equal groups
This week in their maths, Year 3 have explored various multiplication methods using counters. They have been using concrete materials to demonstrate their understanding of both multiplication and division of given numbers.
Year 6 Debt Awareness
This week, year 6 had a visit from the debt awareness team and carried on with their learning from last year. This time, they discussed jobs and working life. They looked at reasons why people choose their occupation; the average income of various jobs and potential careers that they may like to pursue.
Year 2 - Maths
Year 2 have been working extremely hard with their maths work over the past couple of weeks. Today we moved onto subtraction across 10. This can be really tricky but using our number bonds to subtract definitely helped us with our new learning. We played a maths game where we started with 20 counters on our tens frames and slowly subtracted either 1, 2 or 3. We will continue to build on our subtracting skills in our upcoming lessons.
Year 1- Maths
Year 1 have been exploring 3D shapes. This week, they have been recognising, naming and building them. Today they have sorted them into groups. They sorted them into groups by their shape name but also by their features e.g. does and doesn’t have a square face, rectangular face, circular face, triangular face and rounded/curved face. Well done year one.
Year 5 - Maths
Today during our maths lesson, Year 5 have been working on their square and cubed numbers and using them in arithmetic calculations. The children used practical resources to extend their knowledge of cubed and square numbers knowing that they make a perfect cube or square.
Year 4 - Practical Maths
This week in maths, our focus has been on spotting patterns in times tables. We took a hands-on approach, using equipment to calculate times tables, matching up fact families and solving Tarsia puzzles. It’s been great fun!
Reception Counting Arrangements
In Maths, Reception have been counting different arrangements of objects and practising their counting skills. They are remembering their ‘stopping number’ which tells us how many there are in a set once they have finished counting.
Year 2 - Maths
This week in maths we continued to practise our addition. Today we consolidated our work on adding through 10. This can be tricky when you have to add past 10 but our games help us to keep practicing. We discovered the key to making it easier is ensuring we know our number bonds to 10. We will move on to subtracting next week.

Reception have been learning how to use counting strategies to help them count irregular arrangements. This week they have been counting the farm animals who are all in a muddle. They have learnt that to count objects that can’t be moved, we must ‘tag’ them by circling them or putting a mark on them to help us remember which ones have already been counted. Well done Reception!
Year 1 Maths
Year 1 have been learning about identifying and making equal groups in their maths lesson.
Year 4 Are Rounding Rockstars!
The children enjoyed their maths lesson on the tablets today. They rounded numbers to the nearest 1, 10 and 100 on the Rounding Rockets game. I’m sure they’ll all agree it was great fun!
Year 1- Exploring Volume and Capacity
Today, Year 1 were introduced to volume and capacity. They had to fill the containers with the correct volume of water to match the following descriptions: full, empty, nearly full, nearly empty, more than half full and less than half full.
Money Matters Visit
Today Year 6 welcomed a visitor into their classroom, Mr Souter, who led a session around budgeting. Here year 6 took part in class discussions around, wants and needs, understanding the importance of having a ‘surplus’ income and what can happen if we overspend. Year 6 were very mature throughout, asking relevant questions and will hopefully use this information wisely when it comes to their own spending/ saving.
Bullseye Maths
A huge thank you to the Professional Darts Corporation for a great Bullseye Maths session yesterday. We welcomed professional darts player James Wade to St Barnabas and he showed us his amazing darts skills. The boys learnt how darts can really help to improve maths and there was lots of maths going on whilst having lots of fun playing darts. Thank you James, Gary, Will and the coaches for a brilliant afternoon. Good luck in the World Darts Series James!
Year 1 Maths- Measuring using a ruler
As part of their maths unit on measuring length and height, Year 1 were introduced to measuring with a ruler today. The concentration as they measured various lines of different lengths was amazing. They were very accurate with their measuring, always making sure they had the beginning of their line starting at 0cm. Well done Year 1.
Year 6 Science- heart rate
Year 6 have been learning about their heart rate in Science.
Year 3 Science Investigation
Year 3 Science Investigation - working in groups to investigate a question connected with the length of bone in either a leg or an arm. The children have been measuring the chosen bone and also the distance they can either throw, kick or step and whether there is a connection between the two measurements.
Arithmetic Paper
Year 6 have been working hard practicing their arithmetic, by completing a Sats Paper Under formal conditions.
Reception Measuring in Maths
Reception have enjoyed measuring the heights of different superheroes this week, using cubes as a non standard unit. We guessed which Superhero was the shortest and which was the tallest and then used the cubes to check if we were right.
Year 3 Science Investigation-Do people with a longer middle finger throw further?
Year 3 Science Investigation - Do people with a longer middle finger throw further? Year 3 measured the length of each others’ middle finger in centimetres. We then chose five children with different lengths of finger to throw a bean bag. We measured how far they threw a bean bag in metres and centimetres. Our conclusion was that the length of finger did not make a difference to the length of throw.
Year 2 Maths: Recognising 2-D and 3-D Shapes
Year 2 have been looking at 2-D and 3-D shapes today in maths. We explored the names of some 2-D and 3-D shapes and compared some of the shapes and their properties.
Year 5 - Maths
In Maths, Year 5 have been multiplying 2 - digits (area model) using base 10 equipment. They have used the knowledge from a few weeks ago, finding the area of a rectangle.
Reception Maths
Reception have been learning about how to sequence numbers correctly. We have been practising counting out loud to say numbers in the right order and know that each number is one more than the one before.
Year 2 Maths: Selecting money
Today in maths, Year 2 used notes and coins to create different amounts of money. We thought about how we can make different amounts of money, using the fewest amount of coins and notes.
Year 1 Maths
Year 1 have been making numbers between 10 and 20 on their bead strings. They have been looking at ways to do this with more efficiency e.g. for 17, you move 5 and 5 which is 10, then another 5 followed by a 2. Great work Year 1.
Reception: Maths
The children have been learning to recognise numbers and learning how to accurately draw the correct number of objects. We are blown away with their learning and how independent they are becoming when completing activities.
Year 1- 2D and 3D shapes.
Year 1 have been sorting 2D and 3D shapes in different ways. They sorted them in many different ways e.g. those that can and can’t roll, those that have triangular faces and don’t, those that have circular faces and don’t and those that have square faces and don’t.
Year 1 Maths- Making 3D shapes
Year 1 have been making 3D shapes in the construction area. They can recognise cylinders, cones, spheres, cubes, cuboids, triangular prisms, square-based pyramids and triangular-based pyramids.
Common Factors- Year 5
This week in maths, Year 5 have been using counters to find factors of a given number. They have worked in pairs to make arrays which helps them visualise and memorise. They then moved onto finding common factors of two numbers.
Maths- Adding lengths
Today in maths, Year 4 have been adding various measurements in our practical session and then we went onto converting different units of measurement. It was quite a challenge!
Reception: 2D shapes
This week the children have been learning all about circles and triangles. All of the children in reception have been on a hunt around school to find these shapes within their environment. They have been counting the corners and sides of the triangles, whilst noticing that a circle has just one curved edge.
Year 2 Maths- Bonds to 100!
As part of our Maths unit of Addition and Subtraction, Year 2 have been looking at Bonds to 100. We have explored how we can use our knowledge of number bonds 10 ten, to help us with our understanding of bonds to 100, using tens.
Reception Maths
Today, the children have been exploring different ways of making a number. We were blown away by their knowledge and how they explored how to represent different numbers.
Using inverse and multi-step problems
In Year 6, we have been working on multi-step problems to addition and subtraction word problems. Once we completed them, we have been using inverse operations to check them. The children have done amazingly well in grasping what is the important information in the word problems.
Addition and subtraction using different strategies
Today in Year 6, we have been using a variety of different methods to solve addition and subtraction problems. The children have applied bar models, place value grids and column methods to check their answers.
Year 1 Maths
Year 1 have been comparing numbers using the greater than, less than and equal to symbols. They have also been estimating the position of numbers on a number line.
Aliens have landed in Reception!
An alien called Zap landed in Reception this week. The alien wrote a letter to the children and told them that he was lonely. We have thought about what makes a good friend and created our own alien friends. The children have made aliens using foam and have named and described them, they have painted aliens and created 2D shape aliens! Our Ducklings are really enjoying reading the story ‘Aliens love underpants’ too.
