Year 4 Number Fluency Conceptual Lesson

In our Number Fluency session this morning we focused on how to solve division facts by recalling a known multiplication fact. We watched the animations on finding into groups of two, writing and reading division equations and then practical of division facts as multiplication. The children worked really well together to identify various expressions sticking fact families together along with bar models for each representation.

Year 3- British Science Week- Time- Experimenting Yeast Burps every 15 minutes for 45 minutes.

The future Scientists of Year 3 had a fun science project for British Science Week, all about making electricity without burning coal. Working in pairs, they had four cups, each numbered 1 to 4, with yeast added to all of them. Cup 1 got 150ml of cold water, cup 2 got the same amount of warm water, cup 3 had warm water and a teaspoon of salt added, and cup 4 had sugar and 150 ml of warm water. They secured the cups with gloves and rubber bands to keep air in. They observed what was happening every minute 15 minutes for 45 minutes to see how things changed over time. Before experimenting, Year 3 predicted what might happen. Some thought the yeast would turn into flour or make the gloves fly! But they were amazed by what happened. As time passed, the yeast made a gas called carbon dioxide. This gas filled the gloves, making them blow up like balloons. Cup 4 had the most respiration because it contained sugar. As the yeast consumes the sugar, it releases carbon dioxide gas. With nowhere else to go but upwards, this gas gradually inflates the glove. The whole experiment wowed the kids! It was fun celebrating science during British Science Week, with a theme of time.

Year 3- Food Technology- Bake with Jessica Sharp

Year 3 had the best time meeting Jessica this afternoon. Jessica is a professional baker/ chef who runs a bakery business from home. She shared her passion for baking, inspired by her grandmother. The children made a scrumptious fruit crumble, from chopping apples, weighing flour, to layering the pastry and creating the crumble topping. They also had the opportunity to look at pictures of some of the wonderful cakes Jessica has made over the years.

Year 2 - Maths

Today in maths, we continued our learning with multiplication. We made equal groups of counters which we added together. From this we were able to write our multiplication sentence with the multiply symbol. Once we had created our groups, when then moved the counters into stacks. This is called unitising, it made it easier to see that 1 group does not always have a value of 1.

Reception: Imagine That Educational Visit

Wow, what a fantastic day our Ducklings had today. We visited Imagine That in Liverpool and had lots of fun! The children did lots of experiments with dry ice, made magical snow and made slime too. They used their imaginations in the roleplay area, painted a car, explored the creative area and made their own magnets. They were well behaved and represented the school beautifully!

SIG5 Times Tables Competition

We are so proud of our amazing mathematicians for showing great courage when taking part in the School Improvement Group (SIG) timestables competition at St Peter's. Our SIG is made up of 12 other local schools and this was the first timestables competition. Two children were chosen to represent our school from each KS2 class and they had to take part in a TT Rockstars battle with the other schools. We were amazed at the speed of the some of the competitors at some of the other schools and it has made us more determined to keep practising our tables and aim to get faster and faster. Thank you to Mr Prescott, our Maths Leader, for organising our school maths team and to St Peter's for hosting it.

Year 6 Money Matters

The focus of year 6’s money matters session was gambling. The children gained an understanding of how addictive gambling can become and the impact it can have on someone’s life. This was illustrated really clearly to the children in a game they played in which they could place bets with artificial money.

Year One Maths-Using a Numberline to Compare and Order Numbers

This week, Year 1 have been making use of number lines to 20 to compare and order numbers. They have subitising numbers to 20, finding these numbers on their number lines and then deciding which numbers are the greatest and smallest. They have been working on their ability to explain how they have subitised the numbers and also on how they have come to the decision that a number is greater or smaller by thinking about its proximity to zero.

Reception- Maths- finding different ways of making numbers to ten

In maths we have been looking at different ways of making numbers to ten. We have been doing this in various ways, we have used the Hungarian tens frame and we have also used a computer program called ‘ways to make’. The children are really starting to understand numbers in more depth.

Year 5 - Multiplication

Today, Year 5 have been exploring multiplying two digit numbers by two digit numbers. The children used an area model to understand the place value within the multiplication to answer the questions. This helped the children gain a deeper understanding of the material; understanding the role that place value plays when multiplying by a two digit number.

Year 2 - P.E.

This week, we combined our knowledge of shapes from our maths work and our superb P.E skills. After warming up, we jumped into shapes and out of them ready for our landings. The children loved showing off new shapes they jumped into. Some shapes made it more difficult to land so it was important to be quick in and out of the shapes.
