DPSSA Netball League at DVHS
Tonight was the final qualifying night for the DPSSA Netball Finals in a few weeks time. Team B worked really hard in both of their games. Game 1 was another fantastic result - 12-0 Win but Game 2 saw us pitched against a really strong opposition. We lost 7-3 but the children represented school in such a positive and mature manner. Fingers crossed that we finish in the top two and qualify for the final after half term.
The W.O.W. Group - Planning for our Spiritual Garden
The W.O.W. Group have been working hard on planning for our new spiritual garden. We successfully secured some funding to be able to create a peaceful area with multi sensory features and an eco friendly environment in which children can spend time on calm activities. We hope to attract local birds and insects too. Look out for ways in which you can support us to create this new area over the coming weeks.
Reception, Year 1 and Year 2- Story and Craft Club
Today in Story and Craft Club, our school librarian Matthew chose the story, ‘A SUPERPOWER LIKE MINE’ by Dr Ranj and Miss Flynn read it to some of the Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children. The story was all about a little girl called Femi who discovers all the special powers that her, her friends, and the incredible people around her, bring out in one another every day. We had a great discussion about the superpowers that we all have such as being creative, imaginative, kind, caring, amazing at solving problems, loving, helpful and an extremely good friend and then the librarians helped the children to make their own superhero mask.
Year 1 Geography- Ordnance Survey Map Symbols
In their geography lesson, Year 1 have been looking at what the Ordnance Survey Map symbols mean. They had to look for clues within the symbols to make accurate judgements. They found the toilet, post office, school, telephone box, place of worship and carpark easier to guess from the symbol than the road, train station, foot path and footbridge. Year 1 then looked at an ordnance survey map of our immediate local area (Whitehall) and circled the symbols that they could see.
Year 5- PGL- Three day residential trip
Year 5 have been on a 3-day residential trip to Winmarleigh Hall, where they created lasting memories, and tackled challenging activities such as; Zip wire, abseiling, survivor skills, traverse, raft building, quizzes, sensory trail and vertical challenges demonstrating incredible teamwork. Well done Year 5! A huge thank you to Mr Bloomfield, Miss Kachwalla and Rev Ben for their amazing support!
Year 3/4 Tennis Competition

Year 1 PE- Bouncing and Catching a Ball
Today in their PE lesson, Year 1 focused on the fundamental skills of bouncing and catching a ball. When they were catching, Year 1 made sure that their eyes were focused on the ball, they moved their body into the path of ball and their hands moved to meet the ball. They practised their throwing skills using two different sized balls. When Year 1 were bouncing the ball, they made sure that they pushed the ball down and used their fingers and controlled the bounce with their wrist. They even managed to change the speed and height at which they bounced the ball. Well done year 1!

Year 4 - RE: The Essence of the Church
After writing an extensive list of what we would need to create our own class church on the playground, we read what Peter said about ”the church” and realised that we actually only needed 3 key elements: people, the Bible, and a place to gather. Once we found a quiet spot to gather, we began our church by signing the trinity. One of the children selected a passage to read and told us all that she thought it meant that Jesus is always with us. We discussed times when it is important to remind ourselves of this, such as when we are worried about an upcoming event. The children then gathered some natural materials to make their own crosses. We finished with a prayer and returned to class singing “My Lighthouse”.
Year 4 - Class Worship: The Great Escape
Year 4’s class worship on Tuesday was all about the Jewish festival of Passover, the last supper and how Moses led God’s people out of Egypt. We learned about how the people were persecuted by the Egyptian King and how God helped them to escape by calling on his special messenger, Moses, to complete a seemingly impossible mission. We discussed the trust between God and Moses and ended with a prayer from Lisa, our friend from the Diocese.
Year 2 - Fire Service Visit
On Monday, the fire service visited year 2. However after 10 minutes they received a radio call saying there was an emergency so they were needed somewhere else in Darwen. Thankfully Firefighter Clough was keen to come back so on Tuesday morning we got to do it all again. We spoke about how we should react should we ever be in a fire. We also discussed ways to help reduce danger in scary situations. We also spoke about the importance of smoke alarms in our homes. All the children were asked to check their smoke alarms were working at home. We had water guns, wigs, hats and plenty of jokes to make this a memorable visit!
