Reception Rocket Launching
Reception have been learning about Space this week. They watched a clip of a Rocket Launch and have been eager to find out lots about what it's like in Space. They worked with Mrs Thompson to make their own rocket and took it onto the MUGA to see how far they could launch it!
Properties of Shapes- Year 5
In our maths lesson today, the children have been learning about regular and irregular polygons. They have been working in small groups identifying their properties and sorting them into regular and irregular polygons.
Reception Healthy Vs Unhealthy Food
As part of our PSHE topic we have been learning about healthy and unhealthy food. We discussed which foods were healthy and unhealthy and why. The children got to pick some food from the basket, and were asked to sort them to the green hoop which represented the healthy side, or the red hoop which represented the unhealthy side.
Year 4 - Dance
In PE this week, Year 4 worked in groups to put together a dance routine exploring different ways of moving. They demonstrated moving in unison and in canon, they perfected dance moves taught and they added their own moves into their group sequences.
Year 4 - Investigating Symmetry
On Tuesday, our maths work involved using shapes, objects and mirrors to find lines of symmetry. Creating our own symmetrical flags was particularly challenging. We realised that accuracy was important in creating symmetry.
Year 1 Maths- Telling the time to the hour
Today in Year 1, we have been telling the time to the hour. We read and made o’clock times and had a go at drawing the hands on clocks to represent various o’clock times. We even had a go at matching daily events and activities to the correct times e.g. bedtime at 7 o’clock and starting school at 9 o’clock. Well done Year 1.
Rainforest Habitat Diorama- D.T-Year 5
Today the children in Year 5 have been busy making their 3D structures of the Rainforest. They have first used water-based paint to paint the inside of the box to create a rainforest background. They also made some ferns, philodendrons, trees, butterflies and rainforest animals using plain paper or crepe paper whilst waiting for the paint to dry. Tightly twisted strips of green crepe paper to make jungle vines. To add that extra detail they used - small rocks, twigs, dried leaves, and other materials from nature to add texture to their diorama.
RotaKids- Year 5
ROTAKIDS The children in year 5 have put their hearts and soul into RotaKids. Their dedication throughout this project has been immense and we are so proud of each and every one of them. They have expressed themselves with the utmost energy, enthusiasm, and determination. The role of a RotaKid is to raise funds to support local, national and international good causes. During Christmas, every year group sent a Christmas e-card to our local care homes. This was something that the Rotakids organised. They felt it was vital for everyone to receive a card on Christmas day because not everyone has a family. This certainly put smiles on their faces and a few happy tears. For the Spring term, we were given an Entrepreneurial Project. We were given £100.00 to start a small business the money was to be transferred back if we made any profit. This was a competition running between four schools. We were definitely in it to win it! The Rotakids came up with some great ideas. All of the ideas were planned during breaks. We successfully ran two movie nights, one for KS1 and KS2. This is something that we will most definitely consider doing again next year. The children absolutely loved it! Following on from this, we did ' Guess How Many Sweets In The Jar' which was a huge success. Some children had four or five guesses. Every child walked away with a treat and a smile. So for the final bit, we raised a total of £939.00! We came joint first. We were then able to buy outdoor equipment for KS1 and KS2 playtimes, board games for wet playtimes, and give a donation to Christian Aid, Macmillan Cancer Support and East Lancs Hospice.
Reception: all about rockets
During our space themed week, we learnt all about rockets. We watched a rocket launch, found out how they fly and looked at where they go. We looked at photographs of space and the different planets, investigated the shape of a rocket and learnt how fast they fly. We then created our own rocket and launched it. Quite a few of our class would love to become an astronaut so watch this space!!
Reception- Map skills
Today we looked at a map from our visit to Blackpool zoo. We discussed the features and what we found. We then gathered our own resources to make a messy map. The children shared this with Mrs Ham and Miss Ashworth and explained how to follow it. Super work!
Witton Athletics Winners
Go team Barnabas! We are so proud to have won the Witton Athletics competition tonight. We have never won this before and it’s always such a tough competition as we were up against several schools that are much larger than our school. It was great to be back with a bang after missing the last two years due to the pandemic. I am so immensely proud of each and every child that represented our school tonight as they behaved impeccably, ran brilliantly and encouraged each other in true St Barnabas spirit.
Year 2 Spelling
This week in spelling, the children are focusing on words with the ee sound spelt ey. First, we watched a video, introducing our spelling rule for the week. We then looked at some words with this rule, like donkey, money and key. Finally, we completed the ‘Spelling Zone’ and ‘Dots and Dashes’ activity in our spelling books! We will carry on learning about this rule, ready for our spelling quiz on Friday!
