Year of Prayer in Year 1- Sorry Prayers

This week, Year 1 have been writing sorry prayers, screwing these up and throwing them in the bin. Year 1 wrote prayers to say sorry for sometimes shouting at a family member or a friend, being unkind to their brothers and sisters and not listening to their mummy or daddy when they are asked to tidy up for example. We discussed how we all make mistakes and do things that we often later regret but it is how we learn from our mistakes that is important and this is why we say sorry and move forward.

Year 3 - RE: Exploring Joy & Sadness

The Year 3 class began their Easter unit this week with an exploration of emotions. The unit focuses on the joy and sadness experienced in the Easter story and by Christians at this holy time, so we started by discussing emotions we experience during special times and in everyday situations. When we shared our personal experiences, we realised that there is often more than one emotion experienced in the majority of situations. The children were very respectful and responded sensitively to each other’s experiences.

Performing Arts: The Auditions

Miss Woods and Mrs Araujo have both loved our first two sessions with the Year 6 performers. The children have taken their practices seriously and worked hard on their roles ready to audition. We have now decided parts and the children will be informed on Tuesday (18th March). We can’t wait to see you all in this performance at the end of the year.

Reception Maths - Comparing & Ordering

Reception have been looking further at numbers 1-10 and comparing them through the use of sequencing. We have found that each number is one more than the last and gets bigger each time we add one. We are really starting to understand the value of numbers and how these look in our number system.

British Science Week- Year 5- Building Sand Timers and Sweet Reactions

This afternoon, Year 5 had a brilliant time getting hands-on with science, exploring time and sweet reactions. First, the children took on the challenge of building their own sand timers. They worked in teams to create timers measuring one, two, and five minutes and then tested them to see how accurate they were. Our Science Ambassador, Mathew, was on hand to support them, and it was fantastic to see the children applying their scientific knowledge and working together. Then, we moved onto a heart shaped sweet experiment. The children investigated what happens when heart-shaped sweets are placed in different liquids: water, vinegar, and a fizzy drink. Before they started, everyone made predictions about what they thought would happen. They then carefully observed the changes, noting how the sweets reacted in each liquid. This led to some lively discussions about dissolving, chemical reactions, and the properties of liquids. It was a fantastic day of scientific exploration, where the children learned about time and chemical reactions whilst enjoying the teamwork and excitement of discovery. We certainly lived life in its fullness, celebrating British Science Week with engaging and educational activities.

Year 4 History - Developing our understanding of Continuity and Change in both Iron Age and Anglo Saxon Houses

Our history session today involved highlighting and developing our understanding of Continuity and Change in both Iron Age and Anglo Saxon Houses . We first identified key features of the houses such as building material/construction, hearth, bedding, doors and windows. Then we looked at what had stayed the same ( continuity) and what had changed between the Iron Age and Anglo Saxon periods. Finally the children labelled the key features of an Iron Age house which included a thatched roof, central open fire and wattle and daub sides.

Working Walls in Year 4

We are really pleased with how well the children are accessing every toolkit in the classroom to support their learning, especially our working walls. Our English unit and class novel is The Firework Makers Daughter and the children have really got to grips with all stages of the unit starting with gathering content, grammar toolkit collection, scaffolded work and now moving onto their independent pieces which will include fronted adverbials, noun phrases and dialogue.

British Science Week- Year 6- The Great Biscuit Dunk: Exploring Material Properties and Absorbency

This afternoon, our future scientists carried out the "Dunking Biscuit" experiment to celebrate 'British Science Week'. They made predictions about which biscuit would crumble first when dunked in room temperature water, ensuring it was a fair test by changing only one variable the type of biscuit. With the support of our Science Ambassador, Noah, the children carefully observed the results and concluded that certain biscuits, such as the [digestive], crumbled first due to their texture and composition. The science behind this experiment involves understanding the properties of materials, such as porosity and absorbency, which affect how the biscuits react when exposed to liquid. The children enjoyed discussing their findings, reinforcing their understanding of material properties, and of course, sampling the biscuits afterward! It was a fun and engaging way to apply scientific inquiry, develop critical thinking skills, and explore how materials behave in different conditions.

Year 3 - English- Generating Ideas

Today in English, Year 3 have been busy coming up with creative ways to trap the Iron Man. Instead of simply digging a hole, they have been creative and generated ideas such as using a giant magnet to lift him into the air, luring him onto a platform that drops him into the deep sea, or even trapping him under a heavy metal net. The children have shown great imagination in their ideas.

Reception- Year of Prayer- Rubbish Prayers

In class we were looking at rubbish prayers as part of the year of prayer. The children wrote or drew something they would like to say sorry for on a strip of paper. We then quietly said sorry to god and asked him for forgiveness. We then screwed or ripped the piece of paper up and threw it in the waste bin to represent God forgiving us and getting rid of our sins.

Year 1 Science- Testing the Reflectiveness of Materials

Today in their science lesson, Year 1 were testing the reflectiveness of materials. They tested a variety of materials (tin foil, black paper, dark fabric, bright fabric, mirrored plastic, newspaper, shiny paper, and brightly coloured paper) to see whether the light bounced back and reflected onto the white paper. They noticed that mirrored plastic and paper was extremely reflective and brightly coloured paper and fabric was also very reflective and even turned the white paper a different colour. We also found out that dark fabric and paper was not reflective. These colours absorbed the light. Great science Year 1- well done!

Year 6 English

In English, year 6 are continuing their unit of work on Goodnight Mister Tom. This week, the children have been looking at comparing characters, focusing on their actions and speech. They have also moved on to describing settings to paint a picture in the mind of the reader. This will all help the children to create some fantastic pieces of independent writing in the coming weeks.
