Teaching Children Fire Safety
Remember, remember … 5 November is approaching fast, but of course fire safety isn’t only important on Bonfire Night. Help children recognise the potential risks with a timely reminder of fire safety essentials in this week’s #WakeUpWednesday guide and accompanying podcast. Year 3- Class Worship- Celebrating Black History
During our class worship, we honoured Black History Month by exploring the remarkable life of Olaudah Equiano. Once enslaved, Equiano overcame extraordinary challenges to become a prominent abolitionist. We also celebrated the achievements of Nigel Clarke, a pioneering Black footballer, and Betty Campbell, the first Black headteacher in Wales. As we reflected on their inspiring stories, some children shared their aspirations and dreams, such as footballers, teachers, hairdressers and a doctor. We also discussed the resilience and determination it takes to overcome adversity, drawing inspiration from Betty Campbell's journey. We thanked God for providing us with opportunities for education, sports, and loving families.
Year 1 Science- Mythical Creatures
In the final lesson of their current science unit, Year 1 created their own mythical creature. They had to make sure that their creature was a mix of all five of the animal groups that we have been learning about (mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds and fish). For example, a head belonging to a mammal, feet belonging to an amphibian, a body belonging to a fish, a tail belonging to a reptile and wings belonging to a bird. Ensuring that they had included them all was a real test of their knowledge but they did a fantastic job. Well done Year 1!
Year 1 PE- Gymnastics
This week in gymnastics, Year 1 stepped up their sequences from last week by adding a roll. They all created a four part sequence. They had to start their sequence by walking along the apparatus, jumping off it using a jump of their choice (tuck, straddle or pencil), roll across the mat using a roll of their choice (egg or pencil) before completing their sequence with a travel of their choice to take them back to the start (caterpillar, bunny, frog, crab or bear). Their skills are improving week on week. Well done Year 1!
Year 1 English- Finding Key Information in Non-Fiction Texts
In their English lesson, Year 1 were set the challenge of answering questions by finding the relevant information within a non-fiction text. They learnt that using a contents page can be very useful in locating the specific information that you are looking for. Mrs Hegarty and I were so impressed with how they navigated the texts (looking for page numbers) and how they followed along with the reading of the text too. Well done done Year 1!
Year 4 - RE: People Who Stood Up Against Authority
This week, in RE, the Year 4 class researched some famous courageous advocates. The children were split into 4 teams, each being given a picture of a well-known figure who has seen disparity in the world and has acted as a voice for those affected, despite great personal risk. They studied Swedish climate change activist Greta Thunberg, segregation protester Rosa Parks, human rights advocate Archbishop Oscar Romero and slave trade abolisher William Wilberforce. They learned about the important causes these people fought for and why they took action. They also spent time considering which Christian values were shown in their actions.
Year 4 - Maths: 3D Shape
It’s been a very practical session in Year 4 today, with the children handling and exploring the properties of 3D shapes. They used a range of mathematical vocabulary to create an accurate description of their chosen shape, counting the number of edges, vertices, flat faces and curved surfaces. They also used their knowledge of 2D shapes from earlier in the week to name their shapes.
Whole School Worship: Courageous Advocacy
Today in worship we continued to explore the meaning of spirituality, looking at adversity in the world, how it makes us feel, and talking about what we can do about it. We discussed how we can turn our sparks into flames, our ideas into actions. The children were really inspired by some of the images and shared some great ideas, such as donating warm clothing to the homeless, picking up litter so that it doesn’t hurt wildlife and donating food to local shelters and charities. We will be putting some of these ideas into action over the next few weeks, through our Harvest festival and our Rotakids initiatives.
Year 2 - Caption Writing
In English, we are preparing to write our non-chronological reports. Over the past two weeks, we have been practicing the writing techniques that we will need to use in our reports. Today we learnt what a caption is and the purpose of them. We then had a go at writing our own for various pictures.
Craft Club: Emotion Plates
Today at the Little Craft Club the children made emotion plates. They discussed all of the different emotions and the children chose 4 to put on their plates. They have a peg to attach to the emotion that they’re feeling at any time. Super crafting!
KS2 Football Training
KS2 had another exciting football training session following their impressive win in the Kids Cup heat. The energy and enthusiasm from their recent victory carried over, as the children worked exceptionally well as a team, showing great cooperation and communication on the field. Their teamwork was evident in their passing, positioning, and overall gameplay, with everyone contributing to the practice matches. The session not only helped to sharpen their football skills but also reinforced the importance of collaboration and supporting one another both on and off the pitch. The team's hard work and dedication are clearly paying off!
Year 5 - Mayan Workshop
Today, Year 5 visited Darwen Library to take part in an exciting Mayan workshop. Along the way, we took a moment to reflect on spirituality, encouraging the children to be mindful of their surroundings, appreciate the beauty of nature, and recognise the unique characteristics that make our town so special. This time of reflection helped foster a sense of connection to both the environment and their community. Once at the library, the children participated in a range of fun, creative activities. They worked together to find books to answer key questions, explored various sections of the library to locate different types of books, and engaged in a lively Mayan quiz to test their knowledge. The workshop not only deepened their understanding of Mayan culture but also strengthened their research and teamwork skills, making the day a fulfilling blend of learning, exploration, and reflection.
