Year 5- P.E- Move and Learn
This term, the children in Year 5 will have a series of P.E lessons delivered by Blackburn Rovers. Consisting of a series of classroom and physical education sessions, plus home-based family challenges, children learn about the importance of physical activity and how to eat a balanced diet and lead an active lifestyle. This afternoon, we learnt about how physical activity can effect the body and mind.
Year 6 computing
Year 6 have been learning about the second form of remixing by doing genre changing. They have been remixing a vocal stem and changing the genre.
Year 1- Busy bees
Year 1 have really settled into their new school routine. We are so proud of them!
Year 3 RE: Harvest
In RE, our topic this term in Year 3 focuses on the festival of Harvest. This week, we started by thinking about some key questions, such as ‘Why do we celebrate Harvest?’ and ‘Who are we actually giving thanks for?’. Following on from this, we then looked at how Harvest is explored and mentioned in The Bible.
Reception Kandinsky Circles
Today Reception looked at the work of Wassily Kandinsky. We talked about his job as an Artist and the tools he might need for his work. We looked at his famous painting of circles and talked about the colours he used and how we felt about the painting. Then we had a go at painting our own circles using bright colours in the painting area.
Year 1- Counting in french.
Year 1 have been trying really hard in french this week. They have learnt numbers 1-6 in french.
Year 4 - RE: Jesus the Son of God
In RE this week, Year 4 investigated stories from the Bible to find out how they show Jesus was the Son of God. They then presented their findings to their peers.
Year 4 French - Comment Ça Va?
In French, Year 4 were learning how to ask someone how they are and how to respond. I wonder which phrase they liked saying the most.
Year 5- R.E- Faith Walk
Year 5 have been on a faith walk around Darwen with John East as part of our RE curriculum, to visit churches from different denominations of Christianity. We visited St Joseph's, the United Reform Church on Duckworth Street and Spring Vale Methodist. The children had lots of opportunities to ask thought provoking questions which they had prepared earlier. They also had the chance to look around the church, explore the symbols displayed, do a quiz, look at artefacts and experiment a pretend wedding by two of our class pupils. During the walk, we stopped and looked at some of the historic buildings and ruins that are still standing to this date.

Anti-Smoking and Vaping- Whole School Assembly
This morning, we had a visitor from public health Blackburn and Darwen. The children were asked a series of questions related to keeping ourselves healthy. All the children got involved and asked lots of questions and listened attentively. We all learnt that a recent study which was carried out in Blackburn and Darwen that shops were selling illegal vaping and illegal cigarettes. These drugs can be very harmful, they can cause heart disease, lung disease, cancer, hearing loss, dental problems and it can kill us. The children ended the assembly by singing "We can all make a difference in this world of ours". So, no to smoking and vaping!
Message from Mrs Ham- Week 2
We have had another super week in school! The children have all settled brilliantly into their new classes and we have seen great behaviour in school with lots of kindness being shown to each other. A huge well done to Year 1 and Year 4 for winning the amazing attendance award this week! They gained an extra fun session on the MUGA. It is really important that children come to school everyday unless they are really unwell. I have added some information to our attendance page that details minor illnesses and when to send your child to school or not. https://www.stbarnabasdarwen.co.uk/academy-life/attendance We are really having a push on attendance this year due to the interruptions to schooling we have faced over the past few years. Every day does count. A quick reminder that holidays will not be approved in term time and you are likely to face a penalty fine if you take your child out of school during term time. Several years ago we put in an extra week in the May/June holidays to make holidays more affordable for families. I wish you all a lovely extended weekend and our thoughts and prayers are with the royal family this weekend as they laid to rest our long serving and dedicated Queen. Mrs Gardner is taking a special wreath made by our Reception children and several of the prayers that children in other classes have written to London to send our love and respects to the Queen from our whole St Barnabas school family.
