Year 3- R.E- Artwork Reflecting the Sadness and Joy of the Cross

Year 3 has created artwork that represents both the sadness and the joy of the cross. Through their work, they have explored the events of Holy Week, reflecting on the sorrow of Good Friday, when Jesus was crucified, and the overwhelming joy of Easter Sunday, when He rose again. The cross, a symbol of suffering, also becomes a symbol of hope and salvation. Their artwork captures this emotional journey, showing how these two powerful feelings, sadness and joy, are connected in the Christian story of Easter. Some of the artwork will now be displayed in the Rose Garden for everyone to experience and reflect upon.

Reception- Year of Prayer- hot cross buns

As part of our year of prayer, we looked at the smell and taste of the hot cross bun. We spoke about how the cross on the bun symbolises the cross that Jesus died upon. We spoke about why Jesus died and that he died to take away the things we have done wrong. We said thank you to Jesus for giving his life so that we could have the chance of a new start.

Worship with Rev. Ben

Today, during Rev. Ben’s worship, the children explored the theme of living life in all its fullness through movement and storytelling. They engaged in a series of dynamic actions that brought a Bible story to life, immersing themselves in an active and reflective experience. The story they focused on was the Road to Emmaus from the Gospel of Luke. It tells of two disciples walking to Emmaus, filled with sadness and confusion following Jesus’ crucifixion. Along the way, they met a stranger who walked with them and explained the Scriptures, helping them understand God’s greater plan. As evening approached, they invited the stranger to stay and share a meal. It was only when he broke the bread that their eyes were opened—they realised the stranger was the resurrected Jesus! In that moment, Jesus disappeared, leaving them filled with renewed faith and joy. This interactive worship session helped the children connect with the story in a meaningful way, encouraging them to embrace faith, discovery and the joy of living life to the fullest.

Year 6 Art

Year 6 have created their own artwork based on the work of Lubaina Himid’s ‘Five’. Lubaina Himid grew up around bold colours and fabrics due to her mum being a textile designer, and is renowned for her artwork telling stories about black people in western society. In the artwork ‘Five’, various items on the table carry symbolic meaning: the plates clearly displaying the stars and stripes of America and the continent of Africa; the sugar bowl representing a sweeter relationship between the two continents and other items on the table symbolising the transatlantic route taken by slaves in the past. We used this as our inspiration for our Easter artwork and provided images that carry symbolic meaning in answer to the question ‘Who was Jesus?’

The W.O.W. Group - Lego Serious Play in Action

Our wonderful W.O.W. group led their first Lego Serious Play session this week with two children from each year group. They asked their groups to build models that would demonstrate prior learning in RE - for example, “Make a model to show how Christians celebrate Jesus’ birthday”. W.O.W. group introduced the task then gave the children ten minutes to build. During the process, they asked questions and asked children to explain their choices. They made a note of the responses and then presented the models to the group.

Year 3-Year of Prayer-Hot Cross Buns and Prayer

As part of our Year of Prayer this week, the children enjoyed hot cross buns. The cross on the bun symbolized Jesus' death on the cross. We reflected on how Jesus' sacrifice takes away our wrongdoings, and we expressed gratitude for the new beginnings his death makes possible.

Year 2 - Big Lent Walk

Today, Year 2 embarked on their Big Lent Walk, exploring the scenic surroundings of Jack's Key. This provided a wonderful opportunity for the children to appreciate the natural beauty we are fortunate to have within our local area. During the walk, the children were encouraged to observe and identify signs of spring. They were delighted to spot daffodils, butterflies, and bees,  whilst enjoying being outdoors in the glorious sunshine. The total distance covered by Year 2 will contribute 75km to our overall Big Lent Walk initiative. We are continuing to strive towards our fundraising goal and would be grateful for any donations, however small, to acknowledge and support the children’s efforts. Donations to Cafod can be made here: https://schools.walk.cafod.org.uk/fundraising/st-barnabas-ce-primary-academys-big-lent-walk

Year 1- Year of Prayer- Easter Prayers With Hot Cross Buns

As part of the Diocese of Blackburn’s Year of Prayer, the children in Year 1 tasted Hot Cross Buns and said some beautiful Easter prayers. The children could see that the Hot Cross Buns were a symbol of Easter because of the cross that is displayed on them and they were able to make the connection with Jesus’ crucifixion. We collectively said thank you to God for dying on the cross to take away all the bad in the world so that we could have a new start. We saw this as us having the opportunity to lead a life where we respect and show kindness to our world and the people in it. We also said thank you for all the new life that we experience in Spring such as baby lambs, chicks, bunnies, tadpoles and beautiful flowers and prayed that all of the baby animals are brought safely into the world.

Year 5 - Easter Artwork

Year 5 have been exploring Jesus’ victory during this period leading up to Easter. Through discussions and reflections, the children considered how Christ’s triumph brings hope and light into the world, overcoming sadness and darkness. They then expressed their understanding through artwork, using contrasting colours to depict the cross as a symbol of victory against a dark background. Each piece powerfully represented the message of hope, reinforcing the significance of Easter in the Christian faith.

Year 3- The Big Lent Walk

This afternoon, Year 3 walked 2.7 miles, embracing the journey of living life in all its fullness. Along the way, we engaged with our spirituality windows, mirrors, and doors concept, gaining new perspectives, reflecting on our own experiences, and considering how we can make a difference. Through our actions, we not only contributed to a great cause but also felt a deep sense of achievement. We stopped by the graveyard to remember the lives lost, taking a moment to reflect and feel thankful.

Year 3- R.E- The Cross: A Story of Sadness and Joy

Today in RE, Year 3 explored the cross using flap books. They started with a dark-coloured cross on the top flap, showing the sadness of Jesus's crucifixion. By lifting the flap, they revealed a bright, joyful cross underneath, symbolising his resurrection. This hands-on activity helped them understand how the cross can show both the sadness of Good Friday and the joy of Easter Sunday. They discussed about how the dark colours illustrated the sadness of Jesus's death, whilst the bright colours represented the happiness of him coming back to life.
