Year 6 - Gymnastics
Today, Year 6 began their new gymnastics unit, focusing on partner balancing. The children explored a range of paired balances using different body shapes, levels and points of contact. They worked safely and cooperatively, developing strength, stability and control while communicating clearly with their partner.
Year 3 GULP Project-Final Recap and Results
The Year 3 children have completed their final session of the GULP (Give Up Loving Pop) project! This initiative, delivered in partnership with the Blackburn Rovers Community Trust, has been a fantastic journey for our young "Sugar Detectives." Throughout the program, the children have developed vital "Label Literacy" skills, learning how to decode nutritional information and calculate total sugar content in various bottle sizes. Converting grams into physical sugar cubes, allowing the pupils to truly visualise the hidden sugars in their favourite fizzy drinks and juices. We finished with a "Sugar Detective Quiz" to assess their knowledge, and it was wonderful to see how much they remembered about making healthier drink choices. The program has already made a visible impact, with many children now opting for water over high-sugar alternatives, which is also saving on plastic too! We would like to extend a huge thank you to Nathan for his time and expertise.
Year 5 - PE
In hockey, we continued developing our skills in controlling and passing the ball while developing new skills in dribbling, tackling and shooting through a range of fast paced activities in the hall. The children worked in teams of four to challenge each other in a supportive and positive manner to get the best out of every member of the group.
Year 1 PE: Understanding Tactics
Year 1 built their understanding of tactics in PE. A tactic is tricking your opponent. We focused on underarm throwing and tricking our partner by pretending we are aiming one way, but throwing another. It was lovely to see them working together and being kind, even if they were tricked. Their aim has also improved.
Doodle and Dance Club Session 3
This week, children in EYFS and key stage 1 focussed on mindfulness. We listening to some acoustic Disney music whilst completing some mindfulness colouring. It was lovely to hear all of the children chatting together. We finished with some wake and shake- fire and ice and the wiggle dance were a firm favourite!
Inter- House Sports with Reception
Our Sports Leaders did an Inter- House Indoor Athletics session with Reception class on Friday which went down a storm! Every single child was engaged, enthusiastic and had huge smiles on their faces. They completed various relays which focused on their fundamental skills and speed, agility and quickness. Well done Reception class and huge thanks to the Sports Leaders!
Year 3- P.E-Sugar Detectives: Our GULP Project
Today, our pupils became "Sugar Detectives" as part of the GULP (Give Up Loving Pop) project. The children investigated a variety of popular drinks to uncover the hidden sugars they contain. Using their mathematical skills, they completed a comparison table detailing the total volume of each drink and the specific sugar content. The highlight of the lesson was converting grams of sugar into the actual number of sugar cubes to create a visual representation of what we are consuming. A key takeaway for our detectives was the importance of reading labels carefully; they discovered that while some bottles are 500ml, the nutritional information is often only listed for 100ml, requiring them to calculate the total amount for the whole bottle.
Year 5/6 Sportshall Athletics
What a fantastic evening we have had at the Blackburn with Darwen Sportshall Athletics. We had some great successes over the course of the night, especially in the various relays. The final top three schools were extremely close on points and Team B managed to medal achieving 3rd place overall! A huge well done to everyone involved - you do us all proud! Well done!
Reception: Muddy Monday
Today is known as Blue Monday, but our Reception class decided to rename it "Happy Monday" by participating in the five steps to wellbeing. The children focused on being active and taking notice of our special world. During their walk, they were mesmerised by the fog and gave thanks for the birds, insects, dogs, and trees. They returned to school excited to share what they had observed with their peers during "snack and chat." If you are feeling a bit low today, we encourage you to try going for a walk and taking a moment to appreciate the world around you.
Doodle and Dance Club
This week our EYFS and KS1 club learnt to follow instructions to draw different pictures such as butterflies, robots and elephants. The children tried really hard and Mrs Wilkinson was very impressed. We then danced to Waka Waka and completed a Super Mario dancing challenge. We are all looking forward to next week.
Cross Country Club
Cross country club focused on hill sprints this week and we completed these in Whitehall park. We hope that these boost our fitness by building explosive power, strength and endurance in order to help us keep up a good pace when the race season starts.
Year 5 - PE
The children continued developing the fundamental actions of gymnastics: tuck, straddle, pike, star, front support, dish and arch. Then they developed these actions by adding rotations, balances and jumps using the gymnastics apparatus. The children had time to practice and develop their skills while encouraging each other.
