Reception - Comparing who has more?
This week in Maths, Reception have been looking at comparing amounts. We have been thinking about the word ‘more’ when comparing quantities and what this means. The children have been using their subitising and counting skills to help them decide who has more in a range of games within provision. They have done brilliantly with this!
Year 2- Adding by making 10
This week we have be making 10 whilst adding two numbers together. Our knowledge of number bonds to 10 have really helped with this. Sometimes a question can look difficult but we have found if we partition the number to make 10 first it can be much easier to find the answer.
Year 6 - Maths
Today, Year 6 focused on the ability to be flexible in maths and were encouraged to try out different mental strategies to find one that suits them. We discussed that we can often revert back to strategies that we feel comfortable with, but sometimes, if we step out of our comfort zone, we can discover more efficient ways of completing a task. It was great to see plenty of mathematical talk! Well done year 6!
Year 6 - Money Matters
This week, year 6 welcomed a member of the money matters team into their classroom. It was great to hear them discussing potential careers they would like to pursue in the future and the mature responses they gave throughout the session.
Year 4 Maths - collecting and presenting data
In our maths lessons this week we have been focusing on statics. Today the children collected various data including favourite colours and fruits, tallying their results. Following this they then created their own pictograms and bar charts.
Reception: Funnybones
This morning, our Reception class read ‘Funnybones’. Each time we heard big, little and dog skeleton we put actions in so that we all paid attention and could retell the story after. We then completed some challenges in continuous provision linked to the story. Some of the children painted skeletons, some children had to problem solve to complete a skeleton using playdough, some counted bones and matched the amount to the numeral and some practised their fine motor skills too. It has been wonderful to see lots of busy children living life in all its fullness in Reception, well done!
Reception - Subitising Bingo
In Maths, we have been practising our subitising skills by playing a game of bingo. We rolled a 1-3 dice and looked at the different picture arrangements on our sheet. We were brilliant at subitising the amounts on the bingo cards and matching them to the numeral.
Year 4 - Maths: 3D Shape
It’s been a very practical session in Year 4 today, with the children handling and exploring the properties of 3D shapes. They used a range of mathematical vocabulary to create an accurate description of their chosen shape, counting the number of edges, vertices, flat faces and curved surfaces. They also used their knowledge of 2D shapes from earlier in the week to name their shapes.
After-School Foodie Friends Club- Making flapjacks
The Foodie Club had a blast making flapjacks today! They measured the ingredients using weighing scales mixed them thoroughly, and created delicious treats.
Reception - Collections of 3
Reception have been looking at the composition of 3 by looking at different collections. We made collections of 3 using the connecting shapes and talked about what we could see to make 3. E.g. 2 red shapes and 1 blue shape makes 3.
Year 3- Maths- Partitioning 3 digit numbers using place value counters
Today, Year 3 were introduced to place value counters for the first time. They compared them to familiar resources like base 10 blocks and learned to represent numbers using the counters. By breaking down numbers like 253 into 2 hundreds, 5 tens, and 3 ones, the children started to understand place value concepts more easily. They also learned about the hundreds column on a place value chart. It was great to see them supporting each other and using the place value chart to visualise the numbers and their place values.
Reception - Counting to 5
Reception have been focusing on counting objects up to 5. We looked at how to count correctly by touching objects as we count them, saying the numbers in the right order and stopping when we have counted every item in the set - this tells us how many we have altogether.
