Year 3: World Book Week Launch-live event with author and illustrator Liz Pichon
To kick off World Book Week, Year 3 enjoyed a fantastic "15 Funny Years of Tom Gates" live event with author and illustrator Liz Pichon. Year 3 readers were completely engaged as they practised their "doodling" skills alongside Liz, learning how to bring iconic characters like Tom, Derek, and Mr Fullerman to life on the page. The session was packed with creativity and laughter, capped by an interactive quiz that tested their knowledge of the series. It was a brilliant way to celebrate a love of reading and illustration, leaving the children inspired for the rest of the week.
Year 4 English - Writing in Role
In our English session today the children were using a character from our class novel “The Firework Makers Daughter’ to write a short diary extract. The children wrote in the role of Chulak and identified how he felt about finding out the secret to firework making.
Drama Club
Drama Club rehearsals are in full swing! We rehearsed our longest, most action packed scene and the children blew us away.
Year 4 - English: Zones of Relevance
The children in Year 4 have just started their new English topic on fantasy stories. We are reading The Firework-Maker’s Daughter and, in this lesson, the children had to look at how the main character behaves and decide on some of her key characteristics. They had to use the text and dictionaries to sort a list of personality traits into 3 different zones in order to highlight the character’s most dominant attributes. There was some fantastic co-operative learning taking place.
World Book Day
Good afternoon, World Book Day 2026 takes place next Thursday, 5 March 2026. As part of the National Year of Reading 2026, the celebration is bigger than ever, focusing on the joy of reading for pleasure. The theme is "Read Your Way" which encourages children to celebrate reading in a way that feels personal and fun to them. Children are invited to dress as a beloved character from any book or alternatively, children can come in their cosy pyjamas or onesies to celebrate the comfort of bedtime stories and reading for relaxation. Every child will receive a token to exchange for one of 16 special World Book Day £1 titles. Children will take part in a variety of exciting book related activities and will listen to stories throughout the day. Thank you for your support. Mrs Wilkinson
Year 5 - English
Having completed our persuasive letters promoting Fair Trade products, the children had the opportunity to read their letters out loud. The aim was to be as persuasive as possible, using techniques learned from famous speeches of Winston Churchill and Martin Luther King. The children considered how language choice, repetition, pauses, volume and body language can engage an audience and convince people of your argument.
Year 1 English: Enjoying Traditional Rhymes
Today, we enjoyed a variety of different traditional rhymes. In groups, the children had to look at the clues around the room and sing the traditional rhyme to match. We sang Humpty Dumpty, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Five Little Ducks and Incy Wincy Spider. We noticed that traditional rhymes all have rhyming words, repetition and should be sung. Finally, we annotated Five Little Ducks.
Year 1 English: Making Sandwiches
In English, we swapped our instructions with a partner and they had to follow the instructions to make the sandwich. Then, they had to rate their partners instructions and check that they had included time conjunctions, imperative verbs and adverbs. Finally, we got to eat them!
Year 3 Become Researchers- Finding facts about David Attenborough
Today in English, Year 3 has taken the lead as researchers. They've been exploring the lives of "World Changers," looking at historical icons like Isaac Newton, David Attenborough and Florence Nightingale. After coming up with some brilliant questions earlier in the week, the children used Purple Mash to navigate the web and find their own facts. It was fantastic to see them working independently as they gathered all the info they needed to write some impressive biographies!
National Storytelling Week in Year 4
We had a lovely end to the week in Year 4. We had the pleasure of welcoming Caterina ( Luna’s Mummy and one of our Governors) into Year 4 where she shared the story of The Twits by Roald Dahl. The children really enjoyed listening to the story and we would like to say a huge thanks to Caterina for taking the time to come into class and read.
Year 1: Special Visitor
As part of National Storytelling Week, we invited parents and carers to come into school and read. Year 1 were very excited as Annie’s mum, Natalie, came and read to us. She chose to read Monkey Puzzle by Julia Donaldson, one of our favourite authors! Thank you Mrs Eccles, the children absolutely loved the story!
Year 5 - Storytelling through rap
As part of National Storytelling Week, Year 5 learned about how to tell a story through rapping. We discussed how to use a 4 beat structure to build our rap lyrics around, going faster with more words and slower with fewer. The children then wrote and performed their raps to the class, using rhyme, alliteration and phrasing to tell the world about their amazing super powers.
