Year 1 English: Question Marks
In our English today, we looked at sentences that need question marks. Year 1 understood that if a sentence is telling you something then it just needs a full stop, but if a sentence is asking something it needs a question mark. We practiced using actions for question marks and then they independently fixed some sentences in their books with the correct punctuation. Well done Year 1!
Year 2 English- Features of an Information Text
Year 2 had great fun playing a game of "Fastest Finger First" to spot the features of an information text. They searched for headings, subheadings, captions, labels, and facts— and did a fantastic job! This activity helped them get ready to write their own information texts about an animal of their choice, using all of these important features. Before they begin writing, they will gather facts by exploring non-fiction books and using the contents page, just as they’ve been learning. To finish off their project, they’ll be creating their own quiz questions to test each other’s knowledge!
Reception: Elmer challenges
This week the children are reading Elmer. They are learning to retell the story and have completed some wonderful challenges. They have created their own elephants for an Elmer parade, learnt how to create different patterns in our mark making area, created patterned elephants using printing in the paint area and decorated Elmer crowns for our Elmer parade.
Reception- Literacy- creating our own houses for the colour monster
This week the children have been learning all about the colour monster and that each monster represents a different feeling. The children created their own house for a colour monster of their choice and created a special key which unlocked the colour monsters house and realised that feeling.
Year 3 - Exploring Purple Mash
This morning, the children explored Purple Mash, a creative and interactive online learning space. They focused on grammar activities, practising suffixes and using them to create their own exciting sentences. Purple Mash offers opportunities for children to learn through discovery and creativity, which they find both enjoyable and engaging.
Year 3 - English- Expanding Our Vocabulary
Today in class, Year 3 writers were introduced to a thesaurus to help make their writing more descriptive and interesting. We learned that a thesaurus is a tool for finding new and exciting words. The children practiced this by using it to find different words such as beautiful, kind and cruel and which helped them expand their vocabulary.
Y4 English - The Explorer by Katherine Randell
In English today, Year 4 focused on using adverbials for place. We learnt that a fronted adverbial is when the adverbial word or phrase is moved to the front of the sentence, before the verb. The children worked really hard to collect adverbs and then add a comma to start their sentences. Next they used key events from the start of the story to finish their up levelled sentences, correcting along the way with their purple polisher.
Reception- Blending and Segmenting
Our reception children listened and participated brilliantly in our phonics lesson this morning. The children made a circle, inside the circle sat different items of clothing. Mrs Wilkinson used her robot segmenting voice and the children then blended the word together to choose the correct item of clothing. Well done reception class!
Year 3 - Computing with Junior Jam- Writing a blog
Yesterday in computing with Junior Jam, Year 3 were introduced to digital tools for collaboration and communication. They started with blogs, discussing their origins, structure, and how to create them. They then analyzed several different blogs to understand how they're used for various purposes. The children were then paired up and tasked with writing their own blog post on a topic of their choice, applying what they learned about creating a successful blog. Thank you Mr Wray for a great first week of computing!
Year 2 Handwriting
In Year 2, the children have just received their new English books to discover that they now have handwriting guidelines. They have therefore been working really hard to follow these guidelines and produce writing that is neatly presented- well done Year 2!
Year 1 Maths and English- Writing Riddles
Year 1 recently completed an engaging English unit where they focused on creating and writing riddles. To connect this with our maths lessons on recognising coins, we merged our learning by writing riddles specifically about coins. The children really enjoyed sharing their riddles with the class and having their classmates guess which coin they were describing.
Summer Reading Challenge
Summer Reading Challenge A big thank you to Jacqueline from BwD Libraries for visiting school this morning and promoting the Summer Reading Challenge. You can sign your children up to Story Garden, this year's Summer Reading Challenge from The Reading Agency at Darwen or Blackburn Library. Joining is quick, easy and FREE and it's lots of fun too. The challenge is for the children to read any six library books before the end of September, tell us about what they've read, and collect stickers and other prizes along the way. They can also listen to audio books, use the FREE BorrowBox app, or mix and match. If your child participates, please encourage them to bring in their certificate to celebration worship in September so that we can celebrate their reading success
