Year 4 - The Master Baker Process
What a fantastic unit we have just completed in our Food Technology unit - Adapting a recipe. We used a basic shortbread recipe and then added up to three extra special ingredients according to our target audience. The master baker process was very tricky, especially the decorating at the end but the final result is proof of how hard the children have been working throughout.
Y4 DT - Food Technology - Biscuit Making
Today Year 4 moved onto our third food technology session where we were making our biscuit designs. We have adapted the original review by adding various topping ingredients. First we made our shortbread mix, rolled it out and then cut it into our individual shapes and designs. Miss Carol then laid all the biscuits on the baking trays and put them in the oven to cook. We can’t wait to decorate them tomorrow and finally get to taste test the end product.
Year 3- Class Worship - Young Inventors
Today's Picture News class worship highlighted the inspiring ingenuity of three teenagers from India who developed a salt-powered fridge to aid hospitals in rural areas lacking electricity. Reflecting on this through the lens of "windows, doors, and mirrors" in spirituality, the teenagers' story served as a "window" into the needs of others and the power of innovation. We then considered the everyday items that ease our own lives, such as the convenience of a hairdryer, the ready access to running water, and the efficiency of an air fryer. This reflection acted as a "mirror," prompting us to appreciate the impact of even simple solutions on the quality of life. Inspired by the teenagers' creativity, which we saw as an open "door" of possibility, Year 3 resolved to embark on our invention journey, recognising our potential to make a positive difference in the world. This experience connected with the Christian value of hope and the biblical message of using our creativity to serve others. Isaac led a prayer thanking God for inspiring ideas and creative minds, emphasising the importance of using our abilities to make a positive impact, even through small acts of kindness and imagination.
Year 5 - Pop up Books
This week, Year 5 completed their pop-up book designs, bringing classic nursery rhymes to life with creativity, colour and imagination. The children carefully planned their layouts, experimented with different mechanisms and added artistic flair to each page.
Year 4 Food Technology - Biscuit sampling and package evaluation
This week we started our new food technology unit on adapting a recipe. We have chosen to focus on biscuits and we started by evaluating package design and what a target audience is. We then tasted several biscuits including chocolate cookies, fruit shortcake and pink wafers looking at taste, texture and appearance. The children discussed the products in lots of detail and shared reasons as to why they liked/dislike certain biscuits, giving them a star rating.
Whole School Celebration-Living Life to the Full- Afternoon Tea
The afternoon tea, organised by the Smart School Council and RotaKids, was a wonderful celebration of our school family living life to the fullest. There was a lovely selection of cakes and biscuits, some homemade by the RotaKids the day before and some bought in. The children enjoyed chatting, laughing, and drinking hot chocolate together. We're thrilled to share that the event raised an impressive £256, which will go directly towards supporting our school. A huge thank you to everyone who supported the event and to all the staff who helped make it happen. A special thank you to our friends from Darwen Rotary who came along to support too. We look forward to hosting many more in the future!
Reception: Creative masterpieces
The children have been reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar. They have really enjoyed sculpting their own caterpillars in the malleable area, painting symmetrical butterflies and creating butterfly collages too.
Year 5 - RotaKids
Year 5 RotaKids baked a wonderful selection of cakes and biscuits in preparation for hosting an afternoon tea for the whole school community. The event welcomed children from all year groups, who joined us after school to enjoy the treats and spend time together. It was a fantastic afternoon, and all the children had a great time taking part in this special event.
Little Craft Club
At Craft Club this week, the children made miniature action figures of themselves! The children thought about what accessories they would come with and made the figure look like themselves using pens and paper craft. They then welcomed spring by making some floral bookmarks.
Reception Bird Feeders
As part of our learning on Migration, we have been making bird feeders using multigrain cereal and pipe cleaners. We are hoping our bird feeders will attract birds who have flown back to our country after their migration and give them plenty of food to keep them full up as Spring continues. We will hang them on the trees around school and hope to see many more birds visiting us.
Reception: Muddy Monday
The children explored Jack Keys for their Muddy Monday session. They enjoyed a walk, built sculptures, built a den, balanced on natural materials and collectively walked 58km to add to our CAFOD Big Lent Walk. Well done!
Year 3- Art-D.T- Recycled Bottle Art
For Mothering Sunday, Year 3 transformed recycled plastic water bottles and lids into a work of art for their special someone. They painted the bottles with acrylic paint, imagining them as miniature vases, and then added hand-drawn flowers and stems to complete their designs.
