Year 4 Artwork in a Carousel
In our art session this week we completed a carousel of activities which included Batik with one group, William Morris inspired floral deigns and one group did repeated patterns. The children were super creative in the design process even though the concept of the repeated patterns process was quite complex. We can’t wait to display our masterpieces outside our classroom over the next few weeks!
Year 3/4 BwD Primary Schools Key Step Gymnastics Competition
Today we had the pleasure of taking sixteen of our Year 4 children to represent the school at the Blackburn with Darwen Schools Key Step Gymnastics competition at S Bede’s. They took part in three routines ; floor exercise, body management and vault. It was a very long day but the children stayed focused and worked so hard to remember the three complex routines. We had a mixed team, two girls teams and a boys team. They all worked solidly within their squads showing perseverance and encouraging each other every step of the way. We can’t wait to hear the outcome in a couple of days when the results will be shared.
Key Stage 2 - Timestable Rockstar Battle
Huge congratulations to all of our Key Stage 2 children who competed in this month’s Times Tables Rock Stars Battle. We were incredibly impressed with the effort and enthusiasm shown by everyone involved. Our individual award winners are: • Year 3 – Charlie Duckworth • Year 4 – Bobby-Ray Catterall • Year 5 – Carter Corran • Year 6 – Charlie Shorrock A special well done also goes to Year 6, our overall winning class for this battle. As a reminder, in order to raise money for the NSPCC, we will be launching the KS2 Times Tables Rock Stars NSPCC Battle in school on Friday 6th February. Throughout the day, children will collectively build up their scores, which will contribute to a whole-school total. To celebrate Number Day, all children — including Reception and Key Stage 1 — are invited to come to school wearing their own clothes that depict a number (for example: numbers on clothing, badges, or Times Tables Rock Stars-themed outfits). Voluntary donations will be available via ParentPay to support this fantastic cause.
Year 4 - English: For or Against Deforestation?
This week in Year 4, we started our new English topic on debate texts and the children learned some facts about deforestation. First, they recorded a fact they learned from the video and decided if it was an argument for or against. They then worked in groups to consider whether the printed statements were arguments for or against. The children will be working up to writing their own debate texts, forming a balanced argument.
Year 4 - Using causal conjunctions
As part of our English lessons we have continued to build on our for and against points. Today we looked at the main argument followed by how to develop the argument and then its effect - what the effect of deforestation has on the subject. The children tried really hard to use a range of causal conjunctions and extend their arguments further.
Year 4 - Smart School Council
We were practising using our talk tokens in our Smart School Council session this week. The debate was about our favourite way to spend February half term. After a great discussion with some compelling arguments, the second most popular vote was for spending time with family, but the overall winner was having fun with friends.
Drama Club: Prop Making
Drama Club has been fantastic these past weeks. All the children have now auditioned and will receive their roles this week. They have been working really hard to create swords and shields for our show telling the story of Troy. Its great to see their enthusiasm and commitment.
Foodie Friends Club-Victoria Sponge Cupcakes
To make Olivia’s birthday extra special today, we made classic Victoria Sponge cupcakes in our Foodie Friends Club. The bakers carefully weighed the flour, sugar, and butter, cracked the eggs, and worked together to prepare the mixture before baking. Once the cakes had almost cooled, the bakers got to work on the best part: the assembly. They carefully sliced the tops to create a space for a generous dollop of rich strawberry jam and freshly whipped cream.
Year 4 - Science: Air Pollution
The Year 4 super scientists undertook some fieldwork this week. They will be comparing the level of air pollution in 4 areas within our locality and so they suggested some areas to test and off we went to place our test cards. One side of each card was covered with a thin layer of Vaseline with the idea that some particles released from vehicles and machinery will stick to the cards and we can observe and discuss the level of pollution in each area. We also took a reading of the noise level in each area using a decibel meter so that we could determine whether there is a link between noise level and pollution level.
Year 4 - Life Education
The children love a visit from Harold the Giraffe and the Life Education team. Today, the Year 4 class learned about ways to look after our bodies and our wellbeing. Beginning with a look at our bodies’ basic needs, we considered how we can take care of ourselves physically. The children learned why sleep is so important and that sometimes our bodies may need medication to bring them back in balance. They also learned about some problems associated with misusing drugs. Our session also covered friendships and diversity, highlighting the positives of being different to each other. After short video clip of Harold and his friends at a theme park aided a discussion about conflict resolution with particular attention on having different interests but finding a compromise. Finally, the highlight of the session was a visit from Harold.
Class Worship- Reception class, Year 3 and Year 4 -The Power of Kind Words
Mrs Gardner delivered a collective worship session focused on the power of our words, using the theme 'Kind Words.' The children reflected on how kind words can cheer us up and make others stronger, supported by verses from Proverbs and Ephesians. We watched a 'Douglas Talks' video that demonstrated how powerful our words can be, and we closed the worship with a prayer asking for help to use only words that bring a smile to the listener.
Art in Year 4
The children worked really hard on their artwork this week. The focus was ‘ one picture, four views’ and the children were asked to concentrate on one part of a picture using a view finder. They then copied that part of the picture into a 15cm x 15cm square. In each of our four squares we looked at a different part of the picture resulting in some very abstract pieces.
