Reception - Subitising Bingo

In Maths, we have been practising our subitising skills by playing a game of bingo. We rolled a 1-3 dice and looked at the different picture arrangements on our sheet. We were brilliant at subitising the amounts on the bingo cards and matching them to the numeral.

Year 2 - Food Chains

This week in science, we explored food chains we might find in various habitats. There can be lots of technical vocabulary when labelling a food chain. We drew a food chain and used this vocabulary to label the diagrams to help understand the processes that occur in the chain.

Year 6 Art- Symbolic Imagery

Year 6 continued their work on symbolic imagery by recreating Maya ‘Wayob’ that best suited their character. These were displayed in a 15x15cm tile within sketchbooks and decorated with colours that also reflected the individual. In addition, they started to look at the technique of Chiaroscuro which involves making something look more 3-dimensional on a flat surface. Leonardo Da Vinci, among others, was well known for his use of this technique.

WOW Group- Harvest Donations

Dear parents, Harvest is almost upon us and, this year, our wonderful WOW group have chosen to support two charities. They would like to continue to support refugees in our local area through the charity D.A.R.E. (Darwen Asylum and Refugee Enterprise) and are asking for donations of non-perishable food items, toiletries and good quality clothing. Please send these into school any time over the next week (by Thursday 17th October) and we will ensure they get to D.A.R.E. More details of the second charity we have chosen will be released shortly. Thank you, Mrs Araujo :)

Year 3- Class Worship- Celebrating Black History

During our class worship, we honoured Black History Month by exploring the remarkable life of Olaudah Equiano. Once enslaved, Equiano overcame extraordinary challenges to become a prominent abolitionist. We also celebrated the achievements of Nigel Clarke, a pioneering Black footballer, and Betty Campbell, the first Black headteacher in Wales. As we reflected on their inspiring stories, some children shared their aspirations and dreams, such as footballers, teachers, hairdressers and a doctor. We also discussed the resilience and determination it takes to overcome adversity, drawing inspiration from Betty Campbell's journey. We thanked God for providing us with opportunities for education, sports, and loving families.

Year 1 Science- Mythical Creatures

In the final lesson of their current science unit, Year 1 created their own mythical creature. They had to make sure that their creature was a mix of all five of the animal groups that we have been learning about (mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds and fish). For example, a head belonging to a mammal, feet belonging to an amphibian, a body belonging to a fish, a tail belonging to a reptile and wings belonging to a bird. Ensuring that they had included them all was a real test of their knowledge but they did a fantastic job. Well done Year 1!

Year 1 PE- Gymnastics

This week in gymnastics, Year 1 stepped up their sequences from last week by adding a roll. They all created a four part sequence. They had to start their sequence by walking along the apparatus, jumping off it using a jump of their choice (tuck, straddle or pencil), roll across the mat using a roll of their choice (egg or pencil) before completing their sequence with a travel of their choice to take them back to the start (caterpillar, bunny, frog, crab or bear). Their skills are improving week on week. Well done Year 1!

Year 1 English- Finding Key Information in Non-Fiction Texts

In their English lesson, Year 1 were set the challenge of answering questions by finding the relevant information within a non-fiction text. They learnt that using a contents page can be very useful in locating the specific information that you are looking for. Mrs Hegarty and I were so impressed with how they navigated the texts (looking for page numbers) and how they followed along with the reading of the text too. Well done done Year 1!

Year 4 - RE: People Who Stood Up Against Authority

This week, in RE, the Year 4 class researched some famous courageous advocates. The children were split into 4 teams, each being given a picture of a well-known figure who has seen disparity in the world and has acted as a voice for those affected, despite great personal risk. They studied Swedish climate change activist Greta Thunberg, segregation protester Rosa Parks, human rights advocate Archbishop Oscar Romero and slave trade abolisher William Wilberforce. They learned about the important causes these people fought for and why they took action. They also spent time considering which Christian values were shown in their actions.

Year 4 - Maths: 3D Shape

It’s been a very practical session in Year 4 today, with the children handling and exploring the properties of 3D shapes. They used a range of mathematical vocabulary to create an accurate description of their chosen shape, counting the number of edges, vertices, flat faces and curved surfaces. They also used their knowledge of 2D shapes from earlier in the week to name their shapes.
