Year 6 Geography
The focus of our geography lesson today was the UK’s physical features, paying close attention to mountains. We discovered that Slieve Donard (Northern Ireland), Scafell Pike (England), Ben Nevis (Scotland) and Snowdon (Wales) were the highest peaks in their respective countries. The largest of the four, Ben Nevis, can be found in Scotland in the Grampian mountains.
Year 1 Phonics
Year 1 are working really hard in their phonics lessons to learn the alternative ways of reading and writing sounds that they already know. Today we recapped the ‘ew’ grapheme in stew, flew, crew, grew and screw before learning the ‘ue’ grapheme that is used in words such as rescue, due, true, flue and clue.
Year 4 Class Worship - Picture News - Is an e-reader better than a book?
In Class Worship this morning we focused on Picture News, which asked the question - Is an e-reader better than a book? A study from Spain found that print reading could boost skills by six to eight times more than digital reading. Our class was a complete split but the children discussed their ideas behind their choices and then looked at various ways in which we can read. We then looked at what we prefer to read and ordered these from favourite to least favourite. Reading messages from friends came top and reading instructions was our least favourite!
Year 2 - Music
In music this week, we used boom whackers to create different sounds. We created patterns with these sounds as a class. The children love using different instruments and are very lucky that they get the chance to play different instruments.
Year 1 Maths- Using rekenreks
Year 1 have been working hard in their maths lesson this morning. They have been making 11, 12 and 13 using the rekenreks to help them to understand that these numbers are made up of tens and ones.
Year 3- Class Worship- Is an e-reader better than a book?
Today in class worship, we watched this week's story on reading. Year 3 had the opportunity to read from cereal boxes, leaflets, letters, magazines, game instructions, and emails. Some children like reading on screens, especially cereal boxes during breakfast. But most think reading from a real book is better because you can touch and feel it, and some books have cool stuff you can touch and smell. We acknowledged that learning to read requires perseverance and resilience, qualities for which we can take responsibility and we are lucky to have many chances to read. Books can take us to new and exciting places, and we're thankful for the gift of reading, thanking God for everything, especially the ability to learn to read.
Year 1 Science- Sorting Materials
Year 1 started their unit on exploring materials in science today. They had to sort the objects by the material that they are made from (wood, plastic, fabric and plastic) and talk about why those objects are made from those materials. For example they said that a quilt is made from fabric because it needs to be soft, comfortable and breathable, a key is made from metal because it needs to be strong and rigid and a chair can be made from plastic or wood because they are strong, sturdy and easily wipeable. They are looking forward to learning about some other materials and their properties and completing some experiments in the weeks to come.
Year 6 Class Worship
Today, in our class worship, year 6 listened to the story of Philip and Nathanael. They discovered that these two individuals, although friends, had very different personalities, but that this can often lead to stronger friendships. Following this, we noted down what year 6 value in friendship and discussed how we all have the right to choose our own friends.
Year 6 English
In English, year 6 are building up to writing their very own opening to ‘Goodnight Mister Tom’. Today, we focused on dialogue and how it can allow the reader to develop a better understanding of individual characters.
Year 1 Dance
Today in PE, Year 1 have been focusing on facial expressions and body language to express feelings as part of their dance unit. Then they had to create a sequence (stillness, travel, stillness) to show the relationship between Forky and Woody.
Year 5 - Gym
Today, Year 5 had their gym session on our school gym. We looked at all the health benefits of exercise and why we should participate in daily exercise. We used all the machines and explored their functions and purpose.
Year 2 P.E- Explorers Dance
This week in our P.E lesson, we started our dance unit for this half term. We are putting together a dance routine using the theme of adventure. In History we are looking at Explorers and the History of flight so we used movements and pauses that an explorer might do, if they travelled to an unexplored place.
