Year 6 - National Storytelling Week
As part of National Storytelling Week, Year 6 were delighted to welcome a parent, Chelsea, into the classroom to share and read some of the books she enjoyed when she was a child. The children were completely captivated, particularly by the X-Men and The Ghost Trail stories, which sparked lots of interest and discussion. A huge thank you to Chelsea for giving up her time to share her love of reading—Year 6 thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Year 6 - Gymnastics
This week, the children continued their gymnastics unit, focusing on partner balancing. They challenged themselves by exploring more complex and demanding routines, building on previously learned skills. The children worked collaboratively to plan, practise and refine their balances, developing strength, flexibility, control and trust in one another. They were encouraged to evaluate their performances, make improvements and show resilience when attempting more advanced movements, resulting in increased confidence and teamwork throughout the session.
Key Stage 2 - Timestable Rockstar Battle
Huge congratulations to all of our Key Stage 2 children who competed in this month’s Times Tables Rock Stars Battle. We were incredibly impressed with the effort and enthusiasm shown by everyone involved. Our individual award winners are: • Year 3 – Charlie Duckworth • Year 4 – Bobby-Ray Catterall • Year 5 – Carter Corran • Year 6 – Charlie Shorrock A special well done also goes to Year 6, our overall winning class for this battle. As a reminder, in order to raise money for the NSPCC, we will be launching the KS2 Times Tables Rock Stars NSPCC Battle in school on Friday 6th February. Throughout the day, children will collectively build up their scores, which will contribute to a whole-school total. To celebrate Number Day, all children — including Reception and Key Stage 1 — are invited to come to school wearing their own clothes that depict a number (for example: numbers on clothing, badges, or Times Tables Rock Stars-themed outfits). Voluntary donations will be available via ParentPay to support this fantastic cause.
Year 6 - Photography
Year 6 had an amazing opportunity to get hands-on with photography, exploring miniature photography using cameras. With the help and support from DACA High School, the children experimented with blurred backgrounds and focusing techniques, learning how to use camera angles, perspective and depth of field to make their Lego figures interact creatively with the world around them. The session encouraged creativity, teamwork and technical skills and the children loved learning all about the world of photography. Thanks Mr Lewis!
Year 6 - What can we learn from a Census?
Today, Year 6 focused on what we can learn from a census. The children observed the 1851 Royal Census and carefully analysed the information recorded, including names, ages, occupations and places of birth. The children discussed how historians use census data as a primary source to build an understanding of daily life in the past.
Year 6 - Gymnastics
Today, Year 6 began their new gymnastics unit, focusing on partner balancing. The children explored a range of paired balances using different body shapes, levels and points of contact. They worked safely and cooperatively, developing strength, stability and control while communicating clearly with their partner.
Foodie Friends Club-Victoria Sponge Cupcakes
To make Olivia’s birthday extra special today, we made classic Victoria Sponge cupcakes in our Foodie Friends Club. The bakers carefully weighed the flour, sugar, and butter, cracked the eggs, and worked together to prepare the mixture before baking. Once the cakes had almost cooled, the bakers got to work on the best part: the assembly. They carefully sliced the tops to create a space for a generous dollop of rich strawberry jam and freshly whipped cream.
Year 6 - Mixed Media
Year 6 continued to develop their mixed media artwork, building on previous skills and techniques. The children explored the use of background, scale and composition, considering how foreground, middle ground and background work together. Using images of everyday objects, the children creatively transformed them into buildings and structures, reimagining them as part of a cityscape landscape. The children experimented with layering, texture and colour to add depth and detail, showing increasing confidence in their artistic choices and ability to adapt ideas as their work progressed.
Year 6 - E-Safety
Today, the children’s e-safety focus was on Roblox and how to stay safe online. The children explored some of the potential risks linked to online gaming, including communication with others and in-game content and discussed how these risks can be reduced. Using their talk tactics, the children confidently shared their ideas, identified their top risks and explained sensible strategies for staying safe online, such as protecting personal information and knowing when to seek help from a trusted adult. This session helped to develop the children’s understanding of responsible online behaviour and how to make safe choices in the digital world.
Year 6: Coram Life Education
This week, year 6 had their Life Education session, which focused on making decisions. The session began with a recap on how we can keep our bodies healthy and the importance of mental health. The session then moved on to discussing drugs: that they change the way a person thinks, feels and behaves and that there are legal and illegal drugs. The children learned that medicines contain drugs and that medicines can sometimes be unsafe if used incorrectly. The session ended with a discussion around how we can avoid peer pressure and what is meant by being a bystander or an upstander. The children really enjoyed this session and learned a lot, conducting themselves in a very sensible and mature manner.
Year 6 Junior Jam - Music
This week in our Junior Jam music session, the children continued their keyboards unit. They began by recapping reading musical notation, learning fun mnemonics to help them remember the notes. They were then tasked with learning a new song: Pitter Patter, which some children performed to the rest of the class.
Year 6 - Presentation of Learning
Today, Year 6 presented their English learning to Year 5, all centred around Mary Poppins. The children confidently shared a range of work, including detailed character descriptions, thoughtful book reviews and vivid setting descriptions that brought the story to life. The children also performed imaginative kenning poems inspired by Mary Poppins, using expressive language and performance skills. This presentation celebrated the children’s creativity, reading comprehension and writing skills, while also giving them the opportunity to speak clearly and confidently in front of an audience. Year 5 were a fantastic audience and thoroughly enjoyed seeing the high-quality work produced by Year 6.
