Year 5 - RotaKids

Year 5 are collaborating with Darwen Rotary Club on a range of charitable projects to support our school and wider community. Our focus this term is on collecting essential items to help refugees this autumn and winter. In association with Darwen Asylum Refugee Enterprise, we are hoping to collect warm clothing and toiletries in shoeboxes. The children used their amazing art skills to make RotaKids posters for each classroom.

Year 5 - RotaKids

Dear Parents and Carers, This October, Year 5 is organising a special charity drive to support refugee families in Darwen who are in need of warmth and essentials. We are inviting every family at St Barnabas to fill a shoe box with small items that can make a big difference. Suggested items to include: Warm winter clothing (hats, gloves, scarves) Toiletries (soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo) Non-perishable treats (e.g. chocolate, biscuits) Once filled, kindly secure your shoe box with an elastic band and bring it into school by Thursday 23rd October. Together, we can show compassion and bring comfort to those who need it most. Thank you for your kindness and generosity. Warm regards, Mr Mealor & The Year 5 RotaKids

Whole School Celebration-Living Life to the Full- Afternoon Tea

The afternoon tea, organised by the Smart School Council and RotaKids, was a wonderful celebration of our school family living life to the fullest. There was a lovely selection of cakes and biscuits, some homemade by the RotaKids the day before and some bought in. The children enjoyed chatting, laughing, and drinking hot chocolate together. We're thrilled to share that the event raised an impressive £256, which will go directly towards supporting our school. A huge thank you to everyone who supported the event and to all the staff who helped make it happen. A special thank you to our friends from Darwen Rotary who came along to support too. We look forward to hosting many more in the future!

Year 5 - RotaKids - Christmas Cards for Care Homes

Building on from our Worship earlier in the week about spreading joy this Advent, our Year 5 Rotakids decided to take action. Today, they spread festive cheer in the community by creating thoughtful Christmas cards to send to East Lancs Hospice and care homes around Darwen. The children poured their creativity and kindness into each card, adding heartfelt messages and festive designs. These cards will soon be delivered, bringing warmth, joy and a sense of connection to residents who may need it most this Christmas season. It’s a wonderful way to show that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference. Well done, RotaKids, for embodying the true spirit of the holidays!

Year 5 - Trout

As part of Year 5 RotaKids, the children in year 5 have been learning about and looking after trout. This initiative is support by the River Ribble Trust who have been supporting our class throughout our journey. The children have been looking after the trout from the first day when the eggs were planted in the class tank. Throughout their life cycle the trout are now at the fry stage in which the children feed them on a regular basis. Once at a suitable size, the trout will be released into our local river to support and aid the life cycle process.

Year 5 - Trout Exploration

Today, Year 5 had a visit from Ribble Rivers Trust who delivered the session on the release of the eggs to the class tank. The children discussed the life cycle of trout and all the obstacles that they face when being released into the wild such as predators, pollution and other external factors. The children took part in many scientific tasks, games and fact finding to enhance their knowledge when looking after trout.

Year 5 - Darwen Rotary Visit

This week Darwen Rotary visited Year 5 to gain an insight into the work that they have been doing as part of RotaKids. The children discussed their international protect which was raising money for the devastating earthquakes that happened in Morocco. The children then discussed their plans and ideas for their community project which is donating books, toys and coats to local charities to help people who are less fortunate than ourselves.

Whole School Multiplex Movie Night-

We would like to take this opportunity to thank parents, carers and staff for your incredible support and enthusiasm during our recent movie night. We are thrilled to inform you that our dedicated Rotakids, along with our smart school councillors, have fulfilled their promise and successfully completed their final project. Through their combined efforts and hard work, organising a successful multiplex movie night, together we have managed to raise an impressive sum of £580.60 after the cost of food! This significant amount will contribute towards the school minibus, which will greatly benefit our students by facilitating transportation to sports events, competitions, and other important activities. This achievement is a testament to the incredible community we have at our school. Your dedication and willingness to contribute have made a significant impact on our fundraising efforts. Together, we have not only created a memorable and enjoyable event but also managed to raise much-needed funds.

Year 4 Smart School Council

In our Smart School Council session this morning, we voted on which movie we would like to watch at the Rotakids movie night. It was a split decision in the end between a comedy or sports film. We look forward to hearing the whole school vote.
