Year 1 PSHE- Life Education Visit
Today, Year 1 had a life education session with Karen and Harold the Giraffe. We learnt that there are lots of different food groups that we need to be eating to ensure that we are consuming a balanced diet. We learnt about dairy foods such as cheese and yogurts which help to make our teeth and bones strong and healthy, protein foods such as chicken, fish, beans and eggs which support muscle growth, fruits and vegetables such as peas, broccoli, peppers and bananas which provide our body with vitamins and minerals to keep us fit and healthy all over and carbohydrate foods such as pasta, cereals, rice, porridge and potatoes which are good for giving us energy. We then talked about our organs (where they are located and what are their functions). We learnt that our ribs look after our heart and lungs, our heart pumps blood around the body, our lungs help us to breathe and our stomach breaks down our food which is called digestion. We learnt that our body absorbs the ‘good stuff’ from our foods and the ‘not so good stuff’ leaves our bodies when we go to the toilet. We then had a look at a packed lunch that Harold the Giraffe had packed. We talked about how his lunch box included bread (carbohydrates), tuna (protein), cheese (dairy) and a yogurt (dairy). We agreed that it was a great lunch but it could be improved by including a portion of fruit or vegetables. Alayna, Cici and Percy then shared their ideas for a balanced lunch. Alayna said that she would have an egg sandwich, apple, banana and a yogurt, Cici said that she would have a tuna sandwich, cucumber, carrots, grated cheese and orange juice and Percy said that he would have a ham sandwich, apple, yogurt and a boiled egg. To end our session, we watched a video and explored the the friendship between Harold the Giraffe, Kiki the Kangaroo and Derek the Penguin. We learnt that we must always think through what we are about to do before we do it to make sure that there is no risk of us upsetting or hurting anyone. We also talked about the importance of sleep for resting our brains, helping our bodies to grow and rebuilding our energy. Thank you to Harold and Karen from Life Education as Year 1 thoroughly enjoyed the session and learnt lots about how to stay fit, healthy and be a good friend.
Year 3- Online Safety-TikTok
This afternoon, Year 3 discussed the TikTok app. Many children mentioned that they were unfamiliar with it or only used it under parental supervision. We explored the app's features, such as creating and sharing short videos, adding music, and using effects and filters. The children worked in small groups to discuss its advantages, such as creativity and entertainment, as well as potential risks and why it is age-restricted. This helped them understand the importance of using apps responsibly and with guidance.
Online Safety: Tik Tok
With 22% of its billion-strong userbase being between the ages of 13 and 17, the popularity of TikTok among the younger generation is indisputable. Providing entertainment in the form of a stream of short-form video content while allowing its users to post videos of their own the app has skyrocketed to prominence over the last few years, becoming a fixture in young people’s digital lives. Of course, with a platform as popular and gargantuan as TikTok, it can be intimidating trying to figure out how best to safeguard children and young people using the app. That’s why Wake Up Wednesday have released this brand-new guide to TikTok, detailing the main online safety concerns and suggesting strategies to reduce these risks for the app’s younger users.
Year 4 - Linking Schools: Curiosity Questions
In Year 4, we are preparing for our first online meeting with our linking class by thinking of curiosity questions. Before we can write good questions for our linking class, we needed to explore curiosity questions with each other. We played human bingo, in which we had to work in pairs to find one person to match each statement on our grid. We asked questions such as, “Are you left-handed?” and “Do you like pizza and chips?”, to get to know a bit more about each other. Then in our next session we will be considering questions for our friends at St Matthew’s.
Life Education Workshops
On either Tuesday 21st or Wednesday 22nd each class will have a special Life Education workshop led by Karen and Harold the Giraffe from Coram Scarf. The children have really enjoyed the workshops over the last couple of years and they supplement our PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Economic Education) curriculum. Harold the Giraffe scratch bookmarks will also be on sale for £1.00 for 2 bookmarks, 2 ribbons and a wooden stylus. The sessions will cover the following: Reception: All about me Year 1: My wonderful body Year 2: Feelings Year 3: Meet the brain Year 4: Great to be me Year 5: Friends Year 6: Decisions There will be an information session for parents on the Wednesday morning from 8.45-0.00am in the library area, should you have any questions or would like to know more about the sessions.
Year 5 - The CO Crew
Today, the children participated in a workshop delivered by the CO crew, where they learned about the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO). The session covered key topics, including: What is Carbon Monoxide? A colourless, odourless, and tasteless gas known as the "silent killer" because it is hard to detect without special equipment. Where Does CO Come From? Produced when fuels like gas, coal, wood, or oil don't burn properly, with sources such as faulty boilers, stoves, fireplaces, and cars left running in enclosed spaces. The Dangers of CO Poisoning: Symptoms include headaches, dizziness, nausea, confusion, and tiredness, and it can be fatal if not addressed. How to Stay Safe: The importance of installing CO detectors, maintaining appliances, and avoiding indoor use of outdoor equipment. The children engaged thoughtfully, gaining vital knowledge to help keep themselves and their families safe.
Year 5 - E-Safety - JustTalk Kids
During this E-Safety session, Year 5 explored a poster about the app JustTalk Kids. The children discussed the advantages of using the app, such as staying connected with friends, learning new skills and having a safe space to share their thoughts. They also examined the potential dangers, including oversharing personal information, interacting with strangers and spending too much time online. Through thoughtful discussions, the children reflected on how to use apps like JustTalk Kids responsibly. They emphasised the importance of setting boundaries, using privacy settings and always talking to a trusted adult if something feels wrong. This session highlighted the need for critical thinking and safe practices in the digital world.
Year 2 - Safety Seymour
This morning we welcomed Vanessa and Safety Seymour into our classroom. This workshop was focused on highlighting how dangerous Carbon Monoxide can be! We explored different places CO can be found in our homes and which appliances could produce CO. We found out the Carbon Monoxide is produced when fuel is not burnt correctly. Red flame is bad , blue flame is good. We learnt the steps to safety if we think Carbon Monoxide might be in our homes. It was great to learn about something new in class and gain knowledge that could be very useful.
Reception- Winter
Today we explored the snow and ice in groups. We talked about the season winter and what animals we might see in winter, what clothes we might wear, what the outdoors might look and feel like and our favourite and least favourite things about the season. The children came up with lots of their own knowledge about winter we discussed hibernation and animals who hibernate and deciduous and evergreen trees.
Online Safety in Year 4 - Using the Justalk Kids App
As part of our PSHE we looked at online safety both in and outside of school. Today we shared a poster that told us all about an app called Talkids. We looked at all the positive aspects and discussed these in smaller groups. Our main findings that we highlighted were: * specific to our group (13 and under) * a safe space to chat online * parental controls * helps prevent cyber bullying
