Reception: Muddy Monday
Wow! On Monday the children in Reception blew Mrs Wilkinson's and Mrs Thompson's socks off! They walked over 2km around Jacks Key. The children listened to sounds they could hear, looked at what they could see under a bridge and used their imaginations chanting trip trap and the bear hunt story. The children had lots of fun!
Year 4 - PE: Throwing to a Target
The Year 4s are a competitive bunch, particularly in dodgeball sessions. This week our character development focus was ‘respect’. We briefly discussed how we can respect our opponents as well as our teammates. We spent some time practising throwing a ball through a hoop using an overarm throw. We then applied this skill in a game of ‘Cross the River’, in which a team had to get all their players across the hall without being hit by the dodgeball. Many of the children demonstrated their target practice to great effect, managing to get out multiple people.
Year 5 - PE
In cricket, we continued to develop our overarm bowling ensuring our delivery is accurate and consistent. For batting, the children learned how to hold the bat, watch the ball and take a stride towards the ball. Despite the heavy rain, the children still worked hard in the hall to improve their skills.
KS2 Football Club
Today in Football Club, the children took part in a series of matches with specific challenges and restrictions, such as one-touch finishes, overloads and passing forward. These activities helped them to think strategically, improve their teamwork and develop greater control and awareness during gameplay. Everyone showed great enthusiasm and growing confidence throughout the session.
Year 6 - Hockey
This week, Year 6 began their hockey unit, focusing on developing their passing and receiving skills. The children practised maintaining control of the ball while moving, using both push and slap passes to improve accuracy and teamwork. They showed great enthusiasm and cooperation throughout the lesson as they refined their technique and built confidence with the stick and ball.
Year 1 - Fundamentals - Jumping for Distance
In today’s fundamental skills session, Year 1 focused on jumping for distance. We followed various teaching points including crouching with knees bent, swing arms back and forward, explode forward and push off from toes. The children quickly developed their movements using the theory of uncoiling like a spring. We finished with the challenge of can you jump as long as you are high?
Year 2 - Fundamental Skills in PE
In our PE session this week, we focused on improving our distance in jumping. The children moved from limited arm swings to swinging both arms together in order to launch themselves forward. They also realised that using the front of their feet and bending their knees helped them to go further. We will continue to work on landing on both feet after a full extension of our legs and leaning forwards with our body.
Key Stage 1 Multi- Skills Festival at St Bedes
This morning, ten of our Year 2 children took part in the Key Stage 1 Multi- Skills Festival at St Bedes. We also had three of our wonderful Sports Leaders- Seb, Theo and Luca to support and guide the younger children. The children worked their way round the stations which included an over and under relay, aim game, cone stack high stepper and vortex throw. Our children had so much fun and represented our school fantastically well! They encouraged each other in true St Barnabas the Encourager style, listening carefully to instructions and trying their very best. We even came back to school with a gold medal!
Year 5 - PE
Year 5 continued to develop their gymnastic routines by adding starting and finishing positions. They continued to develop their understanding and application of counter tension and counter balance actions and even had an opportunity to show their routines to the children in Year 1.
DPSSA Girls Football League
This evening we saw the start of the DPSSA Girls Football League at Witton. We started our first game against Avondale and came away with a 3-0 win. Next we had Holy Trinity where we won 5-0 and felt like we were on a wining streak! Our final game was against St Edwards where the girls played really well in a tough game which was super close the whole way through but it ended in a last minute goal and St Edwards won 1-0. A great start to the league - well done Team B!
Year 5 - Gymnastics
Year 5 continued to develop their gymnastic skills by incorporating counter tension actions into their routines. Previously we have worked on movements that mirror and match a partner’s actions alongside counter balancing.
Year 6 - Striking and Fielding
Today, Year 6 completed their final cricket session in our striking and fielding unit, finishing with a series of fun and competitive games. The children demonstrated the skills they have been developing over the past few weeks, including batting, bowling, and fielding and showed great teamwork and sportsmanship throughout.
