Reception: Mystery Reader
In preparation for Give Like Dolly Day, Reception enjoyed a very special storytime session today when Georgie’s mummy came to visit. The children were completely captivated as she read two fantastic stories: The Dinosaur That Pooped the Bed and Charlie Cook’s Favourite Book. It was a wonderful way to celebrate the joy of reading, and we would like to send a big thank you to Georgie’s mummy for taking the time to share these brilliant books with us!

Year 3 - Live Author Session
On Tuesday, Year 3 class took part in a live author session on Zoom provided by Picture News. We heard from a number of authors including Jon Lock and Nich Angell, co-creators of the Tiny Hercules book series, and Dadbot author Jack Noel. During the live session, the children had the opportunity to ask questions and take part in challenges, but their favourite part was drawing Tiny Hercules and then creating their own character.
Ready, Set, Read in Year 4
Today we took part in the Ready, Set, Read! Live Author Sessions - Ages 7-9: Inside the World of Stories. It was a free virtual primary live lesson hosted by Picture News as part of the National Year of Reading. We had the opportunity to join live chats, draw a character from a book - Tiny Hercules and find out so much from various authors who joined the session. Being able to explore the creative process behind storytelling, really got the children's imaginations going and they absolutely loved taking part.
Summer Reading Challenge Assembly
Today, Jackie from the Library Service came in to talk to us about the Summer Reading Challenge. She told us about lots of exciting challenges and prizes, so look out for some more information coming home this week.
Year 5 - Children’s Literature Festival
On Tuesday, we had the opportunity to walk down to Darwen Library to participate in Blackburn with Darwen’s Children’s Literature Festival. We had the privilege of talking to Sarah Surgey, author of books such as Subject Society, Jumping Hurdles and The Heavy Bag. She gave us a great insight into the process of writing and the business of publishing, before reading some of her latest book. The children asked some really interesting questions and we all enjoyed this rare opportunity to gain advice and understanding from an accomplished professional.
Year 1: Darwen Literature Festival
Year 1 were lucky to visit Darwen Library Theatre this morning. The author, Dommy B, told us lots of the poems from his book ‘The Dinosaurs are Back!’ The children loved joining in with the rhymes and sound effects. Some children were even invited onto the stage to say tongue twisters and dance. We couldn’t wait to read the rest of the story when we got back to school.
Year 3 Trip to the Darwen Children’s Literature Festival
Today, Year 3 walked to Darwen Library to celebrate the Children's Literature Festival with author and poet Dommy B! The children were completely wowed by his high-energy poetry performance of The Dinosaurs Are Back. He had the entire class up on their feet, joining in and dancing along with him. We were also given a copy of his book to keep in our classroom. It was a brilliant day.
English - Using Inverted Commas in Year 4
Using our class novel, Year 4 wrote a piece of dialogue between two characters for their innovated piece of writing. They also remembered that ‘said’ is dead and had to use a variety of synonyms to improve their final pieces.
Year 1 World Book Day Workshop
Year 1 were fortunate enough to take part in an online workshop for World Book Day. The author of The Flower Thief, Alice Hemming, read her book to us. This book linked to our focus on Signs of Spring. Then, the illustrator, Nicola Slater, showed us step-by-step drawing on the squirrel and the bird from the story. The drawings made by Year 1 were fantastic! It was a lovely way to start our World Book Day celebrations.
World Book Week Showcase
Year 4 have had a wonderful World Book Week and to celebrate we have decided to showcase our best parts in a display outside Year 4. We have included pic collages that highlight our webinar with the author James Fox, The Pinocchio Workshop, learning a piece of text by heart and our fantastic World Book Day Celebrations. We have also included our bag packs which we could take with us into the Amazon in order to survive. This was linked to our favourite class novel - The Explorer by Katherine Rundell. We were so shocked to see Katherine also appear on our World Book Day interactive worship yesterday and it was a lovely surprise! What a week we have had!
Year 5 - World Book Day quiz and creative writing
As it is World Book Day, we changed the timetable this Thursday. We took part in a nationwide book and football quiz led by the Premier League with Year 6. Naturally we answered every question correctly. Then each child wrote an independent creative piece of writing about a story they have always wanted to tell or a book that they have always loved.

Year 6 - World Book Day
As part of World Book Day, Year 6 took part in a variety of engaging and creative activities to celebrate reading and the enjoyment of books. The children participated in a World Book Day Premier League online workshop, where they had the opportunity to watch footballers discuss their favourite books and explain why reading is important to them. The children then took part in an interactive quiz linked to the session, which encouraged them to think about different authors, stories and the importance of reading for pleasure. In English, the children completed a poetry activity linked to Macbeth, focusing on the witches’ famous spell. They explored the language used in the scene and discussed how rhyme, rhythm and descriptive vocabulary help create a mysterious and magical atmosphere. The children then used their creative writing skills to compose their own spell-inspired poems, experimenting with rhyming patterns and imaginative word choices. As part of the day, the children also designed and created their own unique bookmarks. They used colours, illustrations and quotes from their favourite books to produce personalised designs which they can continue to use during reading time. Throughout the day, the activities aimed to promote a love of reading, creativity and imagination, while also giving the children opportunities to discuss their favourite books and share recommendations with their classmates.
