Year 1 D&T- Creating a Stable Structure

Yesterday in their D&T lesson, Year 1 learnt about three different types of windmills (Windmill, Wind Turbine and Pin Wheel) and their features. They then discussed the meaning of a structure and created their own stable structure which was the base of the windmill using paper cups and moulding clay. At the end of the lesson, they tested their structures for strength and stability and concluded that the structure was more stable when it was heavier (contained clay).

Year 3- Design Technology- Identifying features of a Castle

This term in D.T., Year 3 will explore castles in detail and construct their castle structures using materials like cardboard boxes, coloured cards, string and tubes. In today's lesson, the children designed their castles on paper and labelled a castle's key features such as towers, turrets, battlements, moat, gatehouse and drawbridge, labelling them clearly.

Year 4 DT - Food Technology - Creating our own biscuits

In our food technology session we moved on to making our very own biscuits. When designing our biscuits we needed to think carefully about our targeted audience, our budget and adaptation of our basic biscuit recipe. We worked in our groups to create our mixture then we rolled out the dough and cut out our biscuits with a cutter. We then placed the biscuits on a baking tray and Miss Carol took them to the oven to bake for 10-12 minutes. Once they had cooled we then decorated them and popped them in our unique package designs.

Food Technology - Biscuit designing in Year 4

In our DT Food Technology session we have been designing our very own biscuits for a targeted audience. First we looked at what a budget was and how much our basic ingredients would cost. Next we looked at what remaining budget we had from £2.00 per group and then we could decide on what extra ingredients we could add. The children worked really hard to manage their budgets and agree on what would work for their target audiences. We can’t wait to make our new special biscuits and add our own logos to the package design in our next lesson.

DT - Food Technology - Basic Biscuit Making

As part of our DT unit this half term we are focusing on Food Technology. In this session we followed a recipe to make biscuits. We weighed out the correct amounts and then followed the step by step instructions. We used various pieces of equipment such as a sieve, spatula, rolling pins and biscuit cutters in various shapes and sizes. The children took on various roles to prepare the dough and then Miss Carol popped them in the oven for 10-12 minutes. The final product was delicious and we look forward to designing our own versions and adding different ingredients for a targeted audience.

Year 5 DT- Pop up books

This week, Year 5 have completed their Jack and Jill pop up books. The children have created many moving mechanisms such as a lever and pull to make their books more interactive and appealing to the readers. The children will now create their own pop up books based on all the skills that they have learnt within these series of lessons.

For our final science lesson on rocks and fossils, year 3 made their own fossils by mixing together 200g salt, 150g flour and 150g coffee grounds. Next, they imprinted by pressing dinosaur feet into the dough. The process helped them understand how fossils form overtime. Carmen also brought in some fossils from holiday to show the class.

Reception: Stories Jesus Told

This week, the children in Reception listened to the parable, ‘The Wise and Foolish Builders’. The parable explained how you should listen to Jesus. The children enjoyed pretending to listen and not listen to see what happened when building a house on a hard and soft surface.

Year 4 DT - Electric Torches

Today was our final DT session where we evaluated the torches that we made last week. We looked at all of the components of our torches such as the housing, reflector and switches. Many of us said that we would like more time to decorate our torches and next time, upon reflection, we would use a switch rather than make one from split pins and paper clip for safety reasons. The children have really worked hard on their designs and have come so far since week one when we struggled to make a simple circuit! Very impressive samples too- well done Year 4!

Year 3-Food and Nutrition- Making a Seasonal Tart

This term in D.T. Year 3 have been exploring food worldwide, recognising that food grows in different climates and identifying locally grown foods in the UK. At the start of the unit, the children made Japanese skewers, additionally, we were lucky to have a professional baker join us to create a delicious fruit crumble.  For our final lesson, the future bakers/chefs had a hands-on experience creating a seasonal tart using some of our key ingredients: mushrooms, rocket, kale, cheese, and tomatoes. Next week,  the children will evaluate their dishes, provide feedback and identify strengths.
