Year 1 Class Worship- Picture News
This week in Class Worship, Year 1 thought about their morning routine and decided that breakfast was a very important part of this. They then listened to the news about how the government are trialing breakfast clubs across 750 schools. Initially, the class was very divided with regards to whether they thought having their breakfast at school was a good idea. However, after discussing this in detail, most children decided that it was in fact a good idea as it would ensure that every child across the country would have the chance to fill their tummies up so that they can learn, have the chance to eat some of their 5 a day to keep fit and healthy and get the chance to catch up with their friends before school.
Reception, Year 1 and Year 2- Story Club
Today, Miss Flynn and the librarians led a lunchtime story and craft club for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. They read ‘The Baddies’ by Julia Donaldson and got the children to discuss their favourite part of the story. Percy said that his favourite part was when the ghost didn’t manage to scare the girl, Summer said that she thought it was funny when the witch got tangled up in the ropes and the sweet got stuck to her nose, Hollie said that she liked the spell that the witch chanted, Marnie-May said that she enjoyed the troll falling into the river and Heidi said that she thought that the mouse getting the hanky was a nice ending to the story. We then finished with some colourings of a couple of the main characters (the witch and the troll).
Year 1 PE- Rolling a Ball
In their PE lessons, Year 1 are really starting to show that they are mastering the correct technique for rolling a ball accurately. They are working extremely hard to swing their hand back and down whilst their knees are bent and their chest is facing forwards. This week, we really focused on rolling the ball straight by ensuring that we make use of our free arm by aiming it at our intended target. We did this through a game called, ‘Roll and Jump.’
Year 1 D&T- Food Tasting
In Design Technology this half-term, Year 1 are working towards designing and making a healthy breakfast pot. Today in their lesson, they tasted various fruits (peaches, pineapples, raspberries, blueberries, bananas, raisins and dried apricots), healthy cereals (weetabix, shreddies and special flakes) and multiple yogurts (peach, strawberry and Greek style). The children then had to record whether they liked or disliked the foods in a table. Next lesson, the children will give this table to a partner who will design a breakfast pot for them using the foods that they like. They are really looking forward to this!
Year of Prayer and Singing Worship
This morning in our Collective Worship we took part in the year of prayer for this week, which was a prayer about emotions. We discussed with our partner all the different emoji emotions we could see and then named them. We then prayed together for people that we might know in our school or family that might be feeling some of those different emotions at the minute or those who might not be feeling very well. We then had different classes leading the singing and actions for our favourite Easter hymns and songs. What a joyous and uplifting start to the week!
Friday Celebration Worship
Today, we started our celebration worship by signing the trinity and reflecting on another amazing week in school. This week, we have had fabulous week celebrating British Science Week. Thank you to Miss Kachwalla and our science ambassadors for all of the effort they have put into organising all of the exciting investigations they have planned and delivered. We also said a huge thank you to everyone for supporting ‘THE BIG LENT WALK.’ So far, we have now hit an amazing 325km and raised £89. Thank you for helping us to make a difference to the lives of those who aren’t as fortunate as us. Please continue to let either Mrs Wilkinson or Mrs Ham know if you have walked anywhere and send photos if you can. This week, we have also started some amazing work in our classes and enjoyed a collective worship about Easter, enjoyed a great variety of after school clubs such as Craft Club led by Fred and Pearl, Cross Country, Mad Science, Choir, Performing Arts and Gymnastics clubs led by Edstart and our amazing choir sang at the ‘Let’s Go Sing’ concert in Blackpool. A huge thank you to Mrs Govan for leading the choir, Mrs Wilkinson for supporting the event and our fabulous choir for singing their hearts out and representing our school wonderfully well. We then congratulated this week’s individual value award winners. Well done to Cassius, Thomas and Seb in EYFS and KS1 and Finley, Ivy, Summer and Ruby in KS2 for working extremely hard across the curriculum and demonstrating a positive attitude to learning and always showing our Barny’s 4Bs (being ready, respectful, kind and safe). Furthermore, we congratulated our Reception and Year 3 class for being our attendance winners this week with 99.6% and 98.3% attendance and River Darwen as our value award winners this week with 314 points. We then moved on to congratulating our out of school sports award winners. Well done to Minnie for getting the squirrel for amazing behaviour, Eleanor and Olivia for achieving plentiful badges and certificates at Rainbows, Maggie for attending Rainbows for two years and again achieving lots of badges and certificates, Charlie for achieving 10m butterfly, Ava for being awarded a gold medal in her dance and gaining her Squirrels badge, Olivia for achieving the Captain’s Band and Player of the Match during her recent football match for both scoring and assisting goals, Peyton for coming an amazing 3rd place in her recent sparring competition at kickboxing, Rosie for making her promise at Brownies, Thea for being a super gymnast, Annabel for achieving Star of the Week in dance, Finn for coming 2nd place in his recent sparring competition at kickboxing and Evie, Alayna and Arabelle for working hard at Rothwell Arts. Evie showed perseverance in achieving a cartwheel, Alayna showed perseverance in achieving a handstand and Arabelle for demonstrating a bridge. To end our worship, Mrs Ham reminded us that next Friday 21st is ‘Rock Your Socks’ for World Down Syndrome Day. Then, we had a performance from our fantastic choir singing ‘Roar.’ We wish you all a lovely and restful weekend.
Worship with Rev. Matt
Today’s worship with Rev. Matt began with a test of strength. Mr. Bloomfield was challenged to rip three different objects: a piece of paper, a piece of cardboard and a curtain. While the paper and cardboard tore easily, the curtain was more challenging, highlighting its strength and resilience. This demonstration led seamlessly into the powerful moment in the Bible when the great curtain in the temple—the barrier that symbolised separation from God—was torn in two at the moment of Jesus’ crucifixion. Rev. Matt then read the Bible passage describing Jesus’ sacrifice, explaining that when the curtain was torn, it was a sign of God’s deep sorrow but also a powerful symbol that, through Jesus, we are no longer separated from Him. The children reflected on the significance of this moment and how Jesus’ sacrifice allows us to live in a close relationship with God. Following this, the children considered how they could respond by living life in all its fullness. They shared ideas on how to show kindness, forgiveness and love in their daily lives, just as Jesus taught. They discussed ways to help others, make positive choices and appreciate the blessings around them. The worship ended with a moment of reflection, encouraging the children to think about how they can bring goodness into the world, strengthening their connection with God and those around them.
Year 1 PE- Dance
Today in their dance session, Year 1 explored the theme of friendship through facial expressions and body language. They had to think about what friendship looks like when they feel happy with their friends. For this, they had huge beaming smiles and excited expressions whilst gesturing high-fiving, hugging and linking arms. They then had to explore changing their facial expressions and body movements to convey what it would look like if they were unhappy with their friends. We had fed-up, frustrated and angry expressions whilst folding their arms, putting their hands on their hips, dropping their arms beside or behind them and gesturing a stop sign with their hands. We then created a sequence of movements to tell the story of Woody and Forky playing together, Forking running away and Woody rescuing him using some of the facial expressions and gesturing we had practised.
Year of Prayer in Year 1- Sorry Prayers
This week, Year 1 have been writing sorry prayers, screwing these up and throwing them in the bin. Year 1 wrote prayers to say sorry for sometimes shouting at a family member or a friend, being unkind to their brothers and sisters and not listening to their mummy or daddy when they are asked to tidy up for example. We discussed how we all make mistakes and do things that we often later regret but it is how we learn from our mistakes that is important and this is why we say sorry and move forward.
Year 1 Science- Testing the Reflectiveness of Materials
Today in their science lesson, Year 1 were testing the reflectiveness of materials. They tested a variety of materials (tin foil, black paper, dark fabric, bright fabric, mirrored plastic, newspaper, shiny paper, and brightly coloured paper) to see whether the light bounced back and reflected onto the white paper. They noticed that mirrored plastic and paper was extremely reflective and brightly coloured paper and fabric was also very reflective and even turned the white paper a different colour. We also found out that dark fabric and paper was not reflective. These colours absorbed the light. Great science Year 1- well done!
Whole School Worship - The Widow’s Offering
Today in our Collective Worship we acted out the Bible story of the Widow’s Offering. Mr Norris kindly acted in the role of Jesus, and we had 4 children from across Years 4 and 5 acting as the money givers. Each person acted out sharing a small portion of their wealth to charity, and then a poor widow came along and donated two coins. Jesus explained that the widow gave the most because she gave all she had. We all spent time reflecting on how we could give to others during Lent. Some ideas were we could take part in the Big Lent Walk and help to raise money for those who don't have as much food as us and we could show kindness to each other through our 40 acts of generosity such as donating our clothes and toys to charity. We said a special prayer for all of the things we are thankful for and each time Mrs Ham dropped a coin, we said Amen. We are thankful for our family, friends, pets, teachers, food, warm beds and God's creations. We finished our Worship by singing Rich in Kindness and Year 6 modelled the actions at the front.
British Science Week- Year 1- Exploring Chemical Reactions
This morning in Year 1, we carried out an exciting experiment called Exploding Lunch Bag! The children were amazed as they watched a sealed bag suddenly pop. Using baking soda and vinegar, they observed how a chemical reaction created gas, causing the bag to expand until it burst. They discussed what was happening at each stage, making predictions and thinking scientifically about why the reaction occurred. Our Science Ambassador, Noah, was a fantastic helping hand during the experiment. Then we planted mung seeds in a sealed bag with moist cotton wool, the children came up with different suggestions about what might happen next. Some wondered whether the seeds would sprout faster in a warm or cool place and questioned if adding more water would speed up the growth. While others were eager to see if theirs would grow faster than Reception’s.
