Reception - Comparing who has more?
This week in Maths, Reception have been looking at comparing amounts. We have been thinking about the word ‘more’ when comparing quantities and what this means. The children have been using their subitising and counting skills to help them decide who has more in a range of games within provision. They have done brilliantly with this!
Reception: Painting Skills
Our Reception children have been really working hard on painting like an artist. The children have carefully selected colours and the right amount of paint to create some Rangoli patterns for Diwali. Well done!
Worship with Rev. Matt
During this week’s worship, Rev. Matt engaged the children with a game of ‘Real or Fake,’ encouraging them to think carefully about what they see and question whether images are genuine or not. This led into the story of Elijah, who courageously stood against people worshiping a statue made of sticks and stones, teaching the children about the importance of true faith over false idols. To close, Rev. Matt invited the children to reflect on what they would like God’s help with, creating a moment of thoughtful prayer and connection.
Reception - Diwali
During today’s worship, Reception Class led a special service to celebrate Diwali. The children proudly showcased their beautiful artwork, including vibrant rangoli patterns filling the space with vibrant colours. They sang joyful songs and shared the story of Diwali with the whole school. It was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to learn about and appreciate this important Hindu celebration!
Reception: Dough Disco
Our Reception children have been developing their fine motor skills today. Their hands have been getting stronger by completing a dough disco activity. This really helps them to get ready to hold a pencil and form letters accurately.
Year 4- Why did the Romans invade Britain?
Today we started our new history unit ‘Romans in Britain’. We looked at what an invasion is and explored vocabulary such as empire, celts, enslaved and chronology. The children highlighted key dates on a timeline from 55BC when Julius Caesar unsuccessfully invaded Britain, right up to AD 410 when the Roman army left. Finally we looked at the key reasons for the Romans wanting to invade Britain which included sourcing metals, natural resources and better farmland.
Year 4 Street Dance
In PE this week we have started our new dance unit - Street dance. The children were so excited to have a specialist Dance Teacher from Rothwell Arts to lead their sessions. Every single child joined in so enthusiastically and it was lovely to see them having such fun as well as learning new dance terms such as a canon, Smurf and windmills. We can’t wait to continue to build on the piece next week and work towards an end showcase piece.
Year 1 Science and PSHE- Nightingale Farm Visit
What a wonderful time Year 1 had at Nightingale Farm on Tuesday morning. We petted the chickens and the goats, wandered around the barn exploring all of the farm animals (pigs, sheep, goats, chickens and ducks) and learnt lots about their diets. We then completed an activity where we had to choose one of the farm animals, write which animal group it belonged to (mammal, reptile, amphibian, fish or bird) and what it likes to eat. Steph answered lots of questions that we had about the farm animals too. We all thoroughly enjoyed our trip to the park so thank you to Steph for warmly welcoming us and sharing her knowledge with us all. All of the photos can be found here: https://www.stbarnabasdarwen.co.uk/photo-galleries/year-1-nightingale-farm-october-2024
Year 1 D&T- Sliding Mechanisms
In D&T this week, Year 1 created their own moving mechanisms. Their models showed a rabbit coming out of a hat (up and down) and a car moving along a road (forwards and backwards). They worked incredibly hard to do this independently and their models were a success. Year 1 will be using these skills when they make their Christmas themed moving picture books in a couple of weeks.
Year 2- Adding by making 10
This week we have be making 10 whilst adding two numbers together. Our knowledge of number bonds to 10 have really helped with this. Sometimes a question can look difficult but we have found if we partition the number to make 10 first it can be much easier to find the answer.
WOW Ambassadors October Badge Challenge
In our Wellbeing Warrior meeting today, the WOW Ambassadors worked through each year group to highlight which children had managed to complete our weekly challenge of walking or park and striding once per week. It’s fantastic to see even more children gaining their badges now that they can also do this by taking part in the 1K A day in school if needed. The WOW Ambassadors can’t wait to announce the winners of the October Challenge in tomorrow's Celebration Worship.
Year 2 - English
This week we have began reading our new book ‘Prince Cinders’ , this book is a twist on Cinderella and we have really enjoyed the book so far! We have made some interesting predictions, some predicting there will be a happy ever after ending and others are not so optimistic! We are looking forward to seeing if any of us have predicted the rest of the story! We also gave the horrible bothers a grilling as we generated questions for them. It’s fair to say we are not happy with the way Prince Cinders gets treated by his mean brothers.
