DT -Food Technology - Creating our own biscuits - Part 2

In our food technology session we moved on to making our very own biscuits. When designing our biscuits we needed to think carefully about our targeted audience, our budget and adaptation of our basic biscuit recipe. We worked in our groups to create our mixture then we rolled out the dough and cut out our biscuits with a cutter. We then placed the biscuits on a baking tray and Miss Carol took them to the oven to bake for 10-12 minutes. Once they had cooled we then decorated them and popped them in our unique package designs.

Year 4 - Linking Schools: Kindness Chatterboxes

In Year 4, our preparations are in full swing as we anticipate the arrival of our link class from St Matthew’s in Blackburn. In our final half term, St Matthew’s Year 4 class will be spending a day with us and we’ll also be spending a day at their school completing collaborative learning activities. Our chatterboxes contain kind acts and affirmations that we hope will help our visitors feel welcome in our school.

Year 4 - Science: Sound

We finished our science unit on sound in Year 4 this week. For our final extended session we investigated volume and amplitude. We dropped a marble from different heights on to a drum and described the loudness of the sound. We also explored pitch and frequency on a range of instruments. We found that a higher pitch was created when the surface was shorter.

Rev Matt’s Worship - Pentecost

Today Rev Matt came in to lead a worship all about Pentecost and being filled with the Holy Spirit. As a challenge, a group of children were chosen to blow up a balloon as large as possible in 30 seconds. He told us about the events of Pentecost and how the disciples received the Holy Spirit. Pentecost is considered the birthday of the church.

Monday Worship: Mental Health

Last week was mental health awareness week and the theme was find your moments for movement. We began our worship by thinking about what mental health is. Isaac said it is about how you feel, Lucy said it was all about your emotions and Seb said it was about how you feel inside, not outside. We watched a video all about how people can look ok but actually may feel scared, worried or anxious and it is important to talk to someone, to exercise or to take time out for yourself. David told everybody how he felt worried about his SATs but he came into school smiling so people may not have known. Mrs Wilkinson led a mindfulness activity for everybody to really focus on their body. We then discussed how we can move more. The children suggested that we could play outside, go swimming, play football and dance. We then took part in a moodbuster get active workout where we all jumped, did star jumps, squatted and ran on the spot repeating affirmations. We then reflected on how we can move more and how we can promote mental health to ourselves and others. We ended our worship by singing Lighthouse to remind us that Jesus is always there to listen to us.

Year 4 RSE - Time for Change

Today we have had Karen in from Coram Life Education. She covered our RSE unit - Time for Change. We covered lots of subjects and all things puberty. Everyone is unique and it’s normal to question - I’m growing up but am I different? We looked in greater detail at the reproductive system and genitals. The main thing to remember is to show empathy towards each other and each other's body changes and differences.

Year 4 - RE: The Essence of the Church

After writing an extensive list of what we would need to create our own class church on the playground, we read what Peter said about ”the church” and realised that we actually only needed 3 key elements: people, the Bible, and a place to gather. Once we found a quiet spot to gather, we began our church by signing the trinity. One of the children selected a passage to read and told us all that she thought it meant that Jesus is always with us. We discussed times when it is important to remind ourselves of this, such as when we are worried about an upcoming event. The children then gathered some natural materials to make their own crosses. We finished with a prayer and returned to class singing “My Lighthouse”.

Year 4 - Class Worship: The Great Escape

Year 4’s class worship on Tuesday was all about the Jewish festival of Passover, the last supper and how Moses led God’s people out of Egypt. We learned about how the people were persecuted by the Egyptian King and how God helped them to escape by calling on his special messenger, Moses, to complete a seemingly impossible mission. We discussed the trust between God and Moses and ended with a prayer from Lisa, our friend from the Diocese.

Year 4 - Smart School Council

Special school trips were the main discussion point in Smart School Council this week. Once our notary and debate leader were chosen, the class were presented with a debate about school trips. The children were presented with 4 options for possible future school trips and they had to try and agree on one per group as each group was only allowed one vote. The options were football match, beach, museum/art gallery and theme park. And the winner was… …theme park! We then went on to pledge to take action on 6 school improvement ideas.
