Reception - Everything Elmer!

This week in Reception we have been basing our work around the story of Elmer. The children have been busy making collages of the patchwork elephant, printing using sponges, playing Elmer dominoes in the Maths area and so much more. We talked about how Elmer is unique and not like the other elephants, just like God made us all special and unique to one another. What a super week!

Reception Kandinsky Circles

Today Reception looked at the work of Wassily Kandinsky. We talked about his job as an Artist and the tools he might need for his work. We looked at his famous painting of circles and talked about the colours he used and how we felt about the painting. Then we had a go at painting our own circles using bright colours in the painting area.

Today Reception have had a visit to our school library. We talked about the library rules, including how it is important to be quiet and calm and to treat our books with care and look after them. In groups, we read a story together and they were amazing and listening and engaging.

Reception: Phase 1 Phonics

Today, Reception went on a listening walk. They listened and identified different sounds that they could hear. They then tried to make the sounds that they had heard. Albie heard children playing, Eli heard the wind, Fletcher heard a football bouncing, Roman heard Year 2 children playing and Charlie heard the birds tweeting. Super listening!

Reception have really enjoyed exploring their outdoor area. They have built houses using ‘cement’ in the sand, created potions in the water area, been busy roleplaying in the shop, painting, made mud pies, travelled around Darwen on the bikes and scooters and also enjoyed balancing on the equipment. They have been busy bees!

Our school family tree

Our whole school family created their own unique circle for our family tree. It represents our vision of everyone 'Achieving great things through learning and growing together in a love-filled Christian family'. We love that all of the circles are special and unique, just like our children that God created.

Today, the children in Reception have read the colour monster. We have started to talk about the different emotions and our feelings. We learnt what fear, calm and anxious means. The children created a collage of each emotion and we will be focussing on this story this week. Super work!

First week message from Mrs Ham

Good afternoon parents and carers, we have had a fantastic first week back at St Barnabas. We have loved seeing the children looking so smart in their school uniforms and they have been learning lots in their new classrooms. We started the week with a special celebration of our school being 50 years old and sadly ended the week celebrating the life of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. We had a lovely worship this morning where we sang the National Anthem together for the last time for the Queen and for the first time for the new King Charles III. Thank you to everyone who joined us this morning. In the coming days we will be creating a community prayer space, similar to the Pray for Ukraine prayer area where our school family can leave their thoughts and prayers for Her Majesty the Queen and her family. There is likely to be a bank holiday on the day of the funeral so school will be closed on that day. I will let you know as soon as I find out the date. For further information about what your child has been learning this week and about our special worship this morning, please see our news section on our website. https://www.stbarnabasdarwen.co.uk/news or our individual class pages. https://www.stbarnabasdarwen.co.uk/classes-curriculum/class-pages On Monday we will be sending you further information about the curriculum that your child will be taught this half term and meet the teacher videos. For all upcoming events, please see the following page. https://www.stbarnabasdarwen.co.uk/events We wish you all a wonderful weekend with your loved ones. Take care and God bless the Queen, Mrs Ham

Reception Outdoor Play

Reception have enjoyed playing outside on the big yard today. They have been playing on the bikes and scooters and they have played with some of the PE equipment. They were really good at listening to instructions about how to play ‘Duck, Duck Goose.’
